Introduction
When people think of Philippine folklore, they often imagine monsters, spirits or legendary creatures. Yet some of the country’s deepest mythic traditions survive not in short tales but in vast oral epics that can take days to perform. Two of the most important are the Hudhud chants of the Ifugao people in the northern highlands and the Darangen epic of the Maranao people around Lake Lanao in Mindanao. Together they show how folklore can function as history, ritual, law, moral teaching and collective memory at the same time. Both traditions were recognised by UNESCO as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity before being inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.[ICH UNESCO]ich.unesco.orgproclaimed as Masterpieces of the Oral and…Read more…
Unlike written epics that survive in books, these traditions lived for centuries through performance. Their stories were carried by expert singers, remembered by communities and tied to real social occasions such as harvests, funerals, weddings and communal gatherings. They remain among the strongest pieces of evidence that Philippine folklore is not only a collection of legends but also a living system of cultural memory.[ICH UNESCO]ich.unesco.orgHudhud chants of the IfugaoThe Hudhud consists of narrative chants traditionally performed by the Ifugao community, which is we…
Hudhud, Rice Fields and Ancestral Heroes
The Hudhud belongs to the Ifugao people, whose mountain landscape is famous for its rice terraces. Rather than existing as a single story, the Hudhud is a large cycle of narrative chants centred on heroic ancestors, family relationships, customary law and the values that sustained highland communities. UNESCO notes that the tradition contains more than 200 chants, each divided into multiple episodes, with a complete recitation potentially lasting several days.[UNESCO]unesco.orgdocument 1735the Hudhud Chants of the Ifugao | Intangible HeritageDec 22, 2010 — The Hudhud consists of narrative chants traditionally performed…
What makes the Hudhud especially important as folklore is the setting in which it is performed. The chants have traditionally accompanied rice cultivation, particularly sowing and harvest seasons, and they are also performed during funeral wakes and related rituals. In other words, the stories are woven directly into the rhythms of everyday life and major life events rather than being reserved for special theatrical occasions.[unesco.org]unesco.orgdocument 1735the Hudhud Chants of the Ifugao | Intangible HeritageDec 22, 2010 — The Hudhud consists of narrative chants traditionally performed…
One of the best-known narrative cycles concerns the hero Aliguyon. The story is remembered not simply because of battles and heroic feats but because it explores endurance, kinship, negotiation and social order. Like many epic traditions around the world, the hero’s greatness is measured not only by martial success but also by wisdom and the ability to maintain community relationships.[Wikipedia]WikipediaHudhud ni AliguyonHudhud ni Aliguyon
The performance itself matters as much as the plot. Traditionally, a lead chanter begins a line and a responding group repeats or completes it, creating a communal form of storytelling. The audience is not merely consuming a story; it is participating in the preservation of collective memory.[linglithumanities.blogspot.com]linglithumanities.blogspot.comThe Darangen is an epic chant associated with the Maranao people.Read moreNotes on Hudhud and DarangenJul 9, 2011 — The Hudhud is a celebration of Ifugao heroes, heroines, wealth, and culture…
More Than Entertainment
The Hudhud preserves information that written records often miss. Its narratives transmit:
- Genealogies and ancestral memory.
- Traditional moral expectations.
- Customary laws and social obligations.
- Agricultural knowledge linked to rice cultivation.
- Religious ideas and ritual practices.[ICH UNESCO]ich.unesco.orgSafeguarding and Transmission of the Hudhud Chants…The chants are transmitted orally and tell about ancestral heroes, custom…
For folklorists, this makes the Hudhud a cultural archive as well as an artistic performance. It records how communities understood themselves and their place in the world long before modern schooling or mass media.[ResearchGate]researchgate.net388931047 Hudhud A Living Oral Tradition of the IfugaoResearchGate(PDF) Hudhud: A Living Oral Tradition of the IfugaoFeb 13, 2025 — This study focuses mainly on the oral tradition of Ifugao c…
Darangen and Maranao Cultural Memory
At the opposite end of the archipelago stands the Darangen, the great epic tradition of the Maranao people of the Lake Lanao region. UNESCO describes it as an ancient epic song containing a vast body of Maranao knowledge and cultural memory. The tradition is associated with one of the Philippines’ principal Muslim communities, yet many parts of the epic preserve material that predates the region’s conversion to Islam.[unesco.org]ich.unesco.orgDarangen epic of the Maranao people of Lake LanaoThe Darangen is an ancient epic song that encompasses a wealth of knowledge of…
The Darangen is enormous in scale. Scholars and cultural organisations describe it as consisting of multiple interconnected cycles and tens of thousands of lines. Rather than one continuous plot, it contains a network of related stories involving heroes, rulers, families, rivalries and journeys. Among its most celebrated figures is Prince Bantugan, whose adventures became central to Maranao heroic tradition.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
The epic offers a rare window into an older worldview. Embedded within its stories are descriptions of leadership, diplomacy, marriage customs, warfare, honour codes and spiritual beliefs. It preserves aspects of Maranao society that might otherwise have disappeared from memory. UNESCO specifically highlights the Darangen as a repository of traditional knowledge, social values and cultural practices.[ICH UNESCO]ich.unesco.orgDarangen epic of the Maranao people of Lake LanaoThe Darangen is an ancient epic song that encompasses a wealth of knowledge of…
Performance remains central to its identity. Sections of the epic are sung or chanted during weddings and community celebrations, often accompanied by traditional musical ensembles and dance interpretations. Historically, master performers memorised immense portions of the text and transmitted them orally to the next generation.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
A Record of an Older World
The Darangen is particularly valuable because it captures a cultural landscape shaped by multiple influences. Researchers have long noted that while the epic survives within a Muslim Maranao society, it also preserves older layers of belief and tradition. Heroes encounter spiritual beings, ancestral forces and supernatural powers that connect the epic to wider Philippine mythic traditions.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
This mixture of historical memory, folklore and evolving religious identity helps explain why the Darangen remains one of the most studied oral traditions in Southeast Asia.[ICH UNESCO]ich.unesco.orgDarangen epic of the Maranao people of Lake LanaoThe Darangen is an ancient epic song that encompasses a wealth of knowledge of…
Why Performance Changes Mythology
The Hudhud and the Darangen demonstrate an important feature of Philippine folklore: stories survive because they are performed.
A written myth can remain unchanged on a page for centuries. Oral epics work differently. Every performance depends on memory, audience, occasion and performer. This allows traditions to adapt while still preserving a recognisable core. New generations inherit the story, but they also reshape emphasis, language and interpretation.[TOTA]tota.worldVideo: The Darangen Epic of the Maranao People of Lake…The Darangen is primarily an oral tradition, which has placed it in some je…
Performance also changes the social role of mythology:
- In the Hudhud, epic storytelling accompanies agricultural labour and funerary rituals, linking heroic memory to everyday communal life.[UNESCO]unesco.orgdocument 1735the Hudhud Chants of the Ifugao | Intangible HeritageDec 22, 2010 — The Hudhud consists of narrative chants traditionally performed…
- In the Darangen, epic performance reinforces identity, prestige and historical memory during celebrations and ceremonial gatherings.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
- In both traditions, the act of recitation creates community participation rather than passive observation.[linglithumanities.blogspot.com]linglithumanities.blogspot.comThe Darangen is an epic chant associated with the Maranao people.Read moreNotes on Hudhud and DarangenJul 9, 2011 — The Hudhud is a celebration of Ifugao heroes, heroines, wealth, and culture…
Because these epics were transmitted orally, they also faced modern challenges. Migration, language shift, changing agricultural practices and the decline of traditional master performers have reduced opportunities for long-form recitations. UNESCO and Philippine cultural institutions have therefore supported documentation, recording and educational programmes designed to keep the traditions alive.[unesco.org]ich.unesco.orgSafeguarding and Transmission of the Hudhud Chants…The chants are transmitted orally and tell about ancestral heroes, custom…
Why These Epics Matter Today
The Hudhud and the Darangen remind readers that folklore is not limited to fairy tales, monsters or ghost stories. They reveal another side of Philippine mythic culture: long-form narratives that preserve memory across centuries.
The Hudhud connects ancestral heroes to rice cultivation, funerary practice and the social world of the Ifugao highlands. The Darangen preserves the heroic imagination, values and historical consciousness of the Maranao around Lake Lanao. Both traditions demonstrate how oral performance can store cultural knowledge on a scale normally associated with written literature.[unesco.org]ich.unesco.orgHudhud chants of the IfugaoThe Hudhud consists of narrative chants traditionally performed by the Ifugao community, which is we…
Their continued survival is significant not only for the Philippines but for the study of folklore worldwide. They show that mythology is not merely a collection of old stories. It can be a living performance through which communities remember their ancestors, explain their values and renew their sense of identity generation after generation.[unesco.org]ich.unesco.orgproclaimed as Masterpieces of the Oral and…Read more…
