Introduction
Most visitors encounter San Marino through the story of Saint Marinus, but the republic’s folklore does not end with its founding legend. Two of the most revealing pieces of evidence for a broader folk tradition are the Witches’ Path on Mount Titano and the collection of oral tales gathered by the folklorist Walter Anderson in the early twentieth century. Together they show that, although San Marino lacks the extensive supernatural traditions found in some larger European countries, it preserved both a small body of witch-related place lore and a substantial record of everyday storytelling. The result is a picture of folklore rooted less in monsters and magic kingdoms than in landscape, local belief, humour, cautionary tales, and the memories of ordinary people.[culturalpolicies.net]culturalpolicies.netsan marinoCultural PoliciesSan Marino 3.110 Aug 2019 — The “San Marino Folk Tales” – collected in the 1920s by scholar Walter Anderson… oral tra…
The Witches’ Path Between the Towers
The Passo delle Streghe, or Witches’ Path, is the narrow ridge walkway that links the fortified heights of Mount Titano. Running between San Marino’s famous towers and offering dramatic views across the Adriatic coast and surrounding countryside, it is one of the republic’s best-known scenic routes today. Its name, however, comes not from military history but from local legend.[voicemap.me]voicemap.meVoice Map The Witches' pathwayThe Witches' pathway - City of San Marino - VoiceMap…
According to later retellings, medieval inhabitants believed witches gathered along the ridge after dark. Stories connected the path with mysterious fires, whispered voices, nocturnal meetings, and supernatural transformations. One recurring version describes a beautiful young woman who secretly practised witchcraft and travelled to the ridge at night, while local fears associated black cats with witches in disguise. Summer evenings on the path were said to carry strange sounds that listeners interpreted as the voices of witches.[VoiceMap]voicemap.meVoice Map The Witches' pathwayThe Witches' pathway - City of San Marino - VoiceMap…
The setting helps explain why the story endured. The ridge is exposed, windy, and dramatic, especially at dusk. Folklore often grows around landscapes that already feel unusual or liminal, and the narrow spine of Mount Titano naturally lends itself to tales of hidden gatherings and supernatural encounters. The legend transforms a defensive military route into a place of imagination and mystery.[voicemap.me]voicemap.meVoice Map The Witches' pathwayThe Witches' pathway - City of San Marino - VoiceMap…
Unlike the witch traditions of some Alpine or Central European regions, however, San Marino’s evidence is relatively thin. There is no large body of documented witch-trial narratives, no extensive catalogue of local witch beliefs, and no major folkloric cycle centred on witches. The Witches’ Path survives primarily as a place-name legend attached to a specific landscape rather than as evidence of a broad national witch mythology.[Cultural Policies]culturalpolicies.netsan marinoCultural PoliciesSan Marino 3.110 Aug 2019 — The “San Marino Folk Tales” – collected in the 1920s by scholar Walter Anderson… oral tra…
How Strong Is the Witch Tradition?
A useful way to understand San Marino’s witch lore is to compare it with the prominence of the saintly founding tradition. The story of Saint Marinus appears in civic identity, religious practice, tourism, and historical memory. By contrast, the Witches’ Path occupies a much smaller niche within local folklore.[Castelli di San Marino]castellidisanmarino.comCastelli di San Marino The Witches' Path of San MarinoCastelli di San MarinoThe Witches' Path of San Marino - Castelli di San Marino14 Feb 2025 — The Witches' Path of San Marino! The surviving witch material appears to belong largely to popular storytelling associated with a specific route on Mount Titano. Modern tourist descriptions often repeat the legends because they add atmosphere to one of the republic’s most photogenic locations. Yet these accounts usually present the stories as folklore rather than as evidence of an organised historical cult or a deeply documented witch tradition.[tripadvisor.com]tripadvisor.comPasso Delle StregheThat's the gist…Read more…
That distinction matters. In many countries, folklore enthusiasts can trace centuries of records concerning witches, trials, charms, magical specialists, and village beliefs. In San Marino, the available evidence points instead to a modest layer of supernatural storytelling preserved through local memory and reinforced by the evocative character of the landscape. The Witches’ Path is important precisely because it is one of the few clearly identifiable supernatural sites in the republic’s folklore record.[Cultural Policies]culturalpolicies.netsan marinoCultural PoliciesSan Marino 3.110 Aug 2019 — The “San Marino Folk Tales” – collected in the 1920s by scholar Walter Anderson… oral tra…
Walter Anderson’s Oral Tale Collection
If the Witches’ Path represents San Marino’s folklore geography, Walter Anderson’s work represents its folklore archive.
Anderson, a major twentieth-century folklorist associated with the comparative study of folktales, collected oral narratives in San Marino during the 1920s. His compilation became the largest and most important published record of the republic’s oral traditions. According to cultural-policy documentation from San Marino, the collection contains 118 texts, including many recorded in local dialect.[culturalpolicies.net]culturalpolicies.netsan marinoCultural PoliciesSan Marino 3.110 Aug 2019 — The “San Marino Folk Tales” – collected in the 1920s by scholar Walter Anderson… oral tra…
The importance of this collection is difficult to overstate. Small states often face the problem that oral traditions disappear before they are systematically documented. Anderson’s work preserved stories that otherwise might have vanished with changing patterns of rural life, education, migration, and mass media. Later accounts continue to describe his collection as the foundational source for San Marino’s traditional folk narratives.[culturalpolicies.net]culturalpolicies.netsan marinoCultural PoliciesSan Marino 3.110 Aug 2019 — The “San Marino Folk Tales” – collected in the 1920s by scholar Walter Anderson… oral tra…
The tales are not dominated by witches or supernatural beings. Instead, they resemble the wider folk-story traditions of the Italian cultural world: humorous anecdotes, clever tricksters, moral lessons, local legends, and narrative types shared across Europe but adapted to local circumstances. This makes the collection valuable not because it reveals an exotic hidden mythology, but because it captures how ordinary Sammarinese people told stories and interpreted the world around them.[culturalpolicies.net]culturalpolicies.netsan marinoCultural PoliciesSan Marino 3.110 Aug 2019 — The “San Marino Folk Tales” – collected in the 1920s by scholar Walter Anderson… oral tra…
Anderson himself later referred to publishing more than a hundred tales from San Marino, demonstrating that the republic provided a significant body of material for comparative folklore research. His work also connected San Marino to wider European scholarship at a time when folklorists were attempting to trace how stories travelled across regions and generations.[Open Indiana]publish.iupress.indiana.eduSome of these I have published, for example, 116 tales from San Marino.Read moreOpen Indiana“SYMPOSIUM I THE COLLECTING OF FOLKLORE” in “…PROFESSOR WALTER ANDERSON: I am going to describe a special method of collec…
What These Sources Reveal About Sammarinese Folklore
Taken together, the Witches’ Path and Anderson’s collection reveal a folklore culture that is quieter and more localised than many visitors expect.
The Witches’ Path shows how a striking landscape can acquire supernatural associations even when the supporting tradition is relatively small. The legend survives because the place itself encourages storytelling. The oral tales collected by Anderson, meanwhile, demonstrate that San Marino possessed a living storytelling tradition beyond its famous foundation myth.[voicemap.me]voicemap.meVoice Map The Witches' pathwayThe Witches' pathway - City of San Marino - VoiceMap…
For modern readers, these sources offer a useful corrective. San Marino’s folklore is not primarily a catalogue of monsters or magical beings. Instead, it is a blend of sacred history, place-based legend, and everyday oral narrative. The saint on the mountain remains the republic’s central legendary figure, but along the ridge between the towers and within the pages of Anderson’s collection, traces of a broader folk imagination still survive.[culturalpolicies.net]culturalpolicies.netsan marinoCultural PoliciesSan Marino 3.110 Aug 2019 — The “San Marino Folk Tales” – collected in the 1920s by scholar Walter Anderson… oral tra…
