The apple shot and rebellion story
The traditional story takes place in central Switzerland during Habsburg rule. Tell, a skilled marksman from Uri, refuses to bow before a hat placed on a pole by the Austrian bailiff Gessler. As punishment, he is ordered to shoot an apple from the head of his young son. Tell succeeds, but he has secretly prepared a second arrow. When questioned, he explains that if the first shot had killed his son, the second would have been used against Gessler.
