Introduction
Few traditions in Benin make a stronger impression than the great masked figures known as Zangbeto and Gelede. To an outsider they can look like colourful festival performers, but within the communities that maintain them they represent something much deeper: the visible presence of powers that normally remain unseen. Through masks, music, dance and ritual, ideas about protection, morality, ancestry and social harmony are turned into public events that entire communities can witness.
Although both traditions involve masked performances, they serve different purposes. Zangbeto are associated with guardianship, security and communal authority among Ogu communities, especially around Porto-Novo and the coastal region. Gelede, practised among Yoruba-Nago communities in Benin and neighbouring countries, honours female spiritual power and the vital role of women in society. Together they show how masking traditions in Benin are not merely entertainment but a way of expressing social rules, religious beliefs and collective memory.[Diva Portal]diva-portal.orgDiva Portal ZangbetoDiva PortalZangbeto:May 17, 2011 — by F Hunsu · 2011 · Cited by 9 — This study examines Zangbeto, a revered traditional group of communal…
Why Do Benin’s Masks Feel So Powerful?
The power of these masks comes partly from a deliberate blurring of boundaries. Participants and spectators often treat the masked figure not simply as a person in costume but as a temporary embodiment of a spirit, ancestral force or sacred authority. The performance creates a public encounter with powers that are normally hidden.
In Beninese traditions influenced by Vodun and related belief systems, secrecy itself can be important. Knowledge is often transmitted through initiation, ritual practice and oral teaching rather than open explanation. The mask therefore becomes a visible sign of an invisible world. What the audience sees is only part of the meaning; much of the significance lies in what is believed to stand behind the performance.[Diva Portal]diva-portal.orgDiva Portal ZangbetoDiva PortalZangbeto:May 17, 2011 — by F Hunsu · 2011 · Cited by 9 — This study examines Zangbeto, a revered traditional group of communal…
This helps explain why masks can simultaneously entertain, educate and command respect. They are artistic objects, but they are also social institutions.
Zangbeto as Night Guardian
Among the Ogu people of southern Benin, Zangbeto is traditionally understood as a guardian of the community. The name is commonly translated as “people of the night” or “night-watchmen”, reflecting a long association with patrols, vigilance and the maintenance of order. Historically, Zangbeto groups acted as a community-based security institution, helping protect settlements before modern police forces existed.[Diva Portal]diva-portal.orgDiva Portal ZangbetoDiva PortalZangbeto:May 17, 2011 — by F Hunsu · 2011 · Cited by 9 — This study examines Zangbeto, a revered traditional group of communal…
The most recognisable Zangbeto figures are towering cones of raffia that whirl and spin dramatically. During public appearances they may seem almost otherworldly, appearing as moving bundles of straw with no visible human body. Stories and performances often emphasise mystery, encouraging spectators to view the figure as something more than an ordinary masquerader. Oral traditions describe Zangbeto as possessing supernatural authority and special powers connected with the unseen world.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
More Than a Costume
What makes Zangbeto important in folklore is not simply the appearance of the mask but its social function. Researchers studying the tradition have noted that Zangbeto institutions have been involved in community policing, dispute resolution and conflict mediation. Rather than being a relic of the past, the tradition has repeatedly adapted to changing social conditions while retaining its reputation as a guardian of local order.[Diva Portal]diva-portal.orgDiva Portal ZangbetoDiva PortalZangbeto:May 17, 2011 — by F Hunsu · 2011 · Cited by 9 — This study examines Zangbeto, a revered traditional group of communal…
Many accounts also link Zangbeto with protection against dangers that are both physical and spiritual. Oral narratives may describe thieves, witches or other harmful forces being detected by the guardians of the night. Whether interpreted literally, symbolically or somewhere between the two, the message is clear: wrongdoing is believed to have consequences because the community is being watched.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
From Village Security to Cultural Symbol
Today, Zangbeto remains one of the most recognisable masked traditions in Benin. Public festivals in Porto-Novo and other areas regularly feature performances, and the image of the raffia-clad guardian has become a symbol of local identity. Modern heritage events often present Zangbeto as both cultural heritage and living tradition, illustrating how an institution once associated with practical security has become part of Benin’s public cultural landscape.[The Guardian Nigeria]guardian.ngThe Guardian Nigeria Porto-Novo's mask festival celebrates Benin's rich VodunThe Guardian NigeriaPorto-Novo's mask festival celebrates Benin's rich Vodun…August 17, 2024 — 17 Aug 2024 — The three-day Porto-Novo…
Gelede Masks and Female Spiritual Power
If Zangbeto represents protection, Gelede is best understood as a celebration of balance and respect. The Gelede tradition is practised by Yoruba-Nago communities in Benin, Nigeria and Togo and has been recognised by UNESCO as an important element of intangible cultural heritage. The ceremony honours the primordial mother figure known as Iyà Nlà and acknowledges the influence of women in social and spiritual life.[Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgIntangible Cultural HeritageOral heritage of GeledeThe Gelede is performed by the Yoruba-Nago community that is spread over Benin, Nigeri…
A central idea in Gelede is that women—especially elderly women and female ancestors—possess profound spiritual influence. The performances are intended not only to celebrate that power but also to maintain harmony between visible society and the unseen forces believed to shape it. UNESCO describes the tradition as paying tribute to women’s role in social organisation and community development.[Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgIntangible Cultural HeritageOral heritage of GeledeThe Gelede is performed by the Yoruba-Nago community that is spread over Benin, Nigeri…
Masks That Teach as Well as Entertain
Gelede performances combine music, dance, poetry, satire and carved masks. The masks often depict people, animals or scenes from everyday life. Some contain humorous or critical messages about social behaviour, leadership or community problems. Rather than being separate from society, the masquerade comments on society itself.[Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgIntangible Cultural HeritageOral heritage of GeledeThe Gelede is performed by the Yoruba-Nago community that is spread over Benin, Nigeri…
Animal imagery is especially important. Birds, for example, are frequently linked with female spiritual power, while snakes may symbolise authority and potency. Through songs and visual symbolism, performers retell stories, preserve oral traditions and remind audiences of accepted social values.[University of Michigan Museum of Art]umma.umich.eduUniversity of Michigan Museum of ArtArt Object: Gelede MaskThe bird atop this mask may refer to the power of women in the community, as b…
An Unusual Place for Women in a Mask Society
One feature that has attracted scholarly attention is the role of women within Gelede organisation. UNESCO notes that Gelede is unusual because women participate in leadership alongside men. The tradition preserves memories of older social arrangements and places female authority at the centre of ritual life, even though the masked performers themselves are generally men.[Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgIntangible Cultural HeritageLe patrimoine oral GèlèdéC'est la seule société de masques connue à être également dirigée par des femmes. Bi…
This combination of male performance and female spiritual authority can appear paradoxical to outsiders, but within the tradition it reflects the idea that powerful forces must be acknowledged, respected and represented publicly in order to maintain social balance.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
Performance, Secrecy and Public Authority
Zangbeto and Gelede differ in purpose, yet both reveal an important feature of Beninese folklore: authority often appears through performance. A masked figure can embody a guardian spirit, represent ancestral wisdom or communicate moral lessons in a form that is more memorable than ordinary speech.
Public performances also create shared experiences. Entire communities gather to watch, sing, dance and interpret what they see. In doing so, they renew collective memory. Children learn stories and symbols; adults are reminded of obligations and values; visitors encounter traditions that have survived generations of political, religious and social change.[Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgIntangible Cultural HeritageOral heritage of GeledeThe Gelede is performed by the Yoruba-Nago community that is spread over Benin, Nigeri…
At the same time, these traditions face modern pressures. Heritage tourism can transform ritual into spectacle, and younger generations may not always learn specialised knowledge in the same way as their predecessors. UNESCO has identified concerns about safeguarding Gelede traditions, while researchers studying Porto-Novo have noted tensions between tourism, heritage promotion and living religious practice.[Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgIntangible Cultural HeritageLe patrimoine oral GèlèdéC'est la seule société de masques connue à être également dirigée par des femmes. Bi…
Yet the continued visibility of Zangbeto and Gelede suggests remarkable resilience. They remain among the clearest examples of how Benin’s folklore makes invisible powers visible, turning ideas about protection, memory, gender, authority and community into performances that are both dramatic and deeply meaningful.[guardian.ng]guardian.ngThe Guardian Nigeria Porto-Novo's mask festival celebrates Benin's rich VodunThe Guardian NigeriaPorto-Novo's mask festival celebrates Benin's rich Vodun…August 17, 2024 — 17 Aug 2024 — The three-day Porto-Novo…
