Introduction
Older Kiribati belief was centred on a world alive with ancestral spirits, powerful supernatural beings and sacred places. Before Christianity became dominant in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, people across the Gilbert Islands (now the core of Kiribati) believed that the living remained connected to generations of ancestors whose influence could bring protection, success, illness or misfortune. These ancestral powers were not always sharply separated from gods. In many traditions, revered forebears gradually became supernatural figures known as anti—spirits or deified ancestors who occupied a place between myth, religion and family history.[USP Electronic Research Repository]repository.usp.ac.fjUSP Electronic Research Repository KiribatiAmong the many gods revered by the people in Kiribati, the most prominent are the deified ancestors…Read more…
What makes Kiribati especially interesting is that these beliefs were never simply replaced by Christianity. Instead, older ideas about ancestors, sacred locations and unseen powers continued to shape memory, ritual behaviour and local identity. Even today, discussions of heritage, clan origins and sacred landscapes often preserve echoes of the older spiritual world.[eHRAF World Cultures]ehrafworldcultures.yale.edue HRAF World Cultures Spiritual BeliefseHRAF World CulturesSpiritual Beliefs - eHRAF World Culturesby B Kirata · 1985 · Cited by 9 — When Christianity was introduced in the pri…
Who Were Kiribati’s Ancestral Spirits?
In traditional Kiribati belief, ancestors were not merely remembered relatives. Important ancestors could become enduring spiritual powers after death. Many clan histories traced descent from legendary founders whose stories linked families to particular islands, lands and meeting houses. Over time some of these figures came to be treated as supernatural guardians.[De Gruyter Brill]degruyterbrill.comDe Gruyter Brill Chapter 9The Religion of Kiribati and NauruThis is because each atoll had its own ancestor genealogy, and there were often different versions of s…
The most widely known supernatural beings were called anti. The term covered a range of gods, spirits and deified ancestors rather than a single category. Some anti were associated with entire islands, while others belonged to particular descent groups or communities. Historical records collected from oral traditions describe famous anti whose names were remembered across multiple islands long before the colonial period.[Academia]academia.eduAcademia(PDF) Tungaru TraditionsThe paper discusses the anthropological aspects and historical narratives of Tungaru traditions. Traditional accounts also connected ancestral origins with migration legends. One influential narrative described ancestral spirits dwelling in a sacred tree in Samoa before moving through the central Pacific and eventually becoming the ancestors of the people of the Gilbert Islands. In these stories, spirits gradually transformed into partly human and then fully human beings, blurring the line between mythology and genealogy.[Kiribati Tourism]kiribatitourism.gov.kiKiribati TourismHistory – Page 1000 – Kiribati For TravellersMany people in Kiribati believe their ancestors to be spirits, some from Sam…

These figures were not always viewed as distant gods in the way many modern readers might imagine. Oral traditions often treated them as ancestral beings whose authority emerged from kinship, migration and the history of particular communities. Scholars of Gilbertese oral tradition note that rituals, spells and ceremonial practices were frequently linked to specific gods, anti or deified ancestors rather than to a universal pantheon.[SciSpace]scispace.comIn their own words: history and society in Gilbertese oral…Although most rituals and spells are associated with a particular g…
How Ancestors Were Honoured
Traditional worship focused less on large temples and more on specific ritual locations, offerings and spoken prayers. Oral accounts recorded by Arthur Grimble describe ceremonies in which people brought food offerings to stones associated with revered ancestors and addressed prayers directly to them in times of need.[Academia]academia.eduAcademia(PDF) Tungaru TraditionsThe paper discusses the anthropological aspects and historical narratives of Tungaru traditions. Ancestor veneration could be deeply local. A community might honour the founder of its lineage at a particular stone, shrine or sacred site. The purpose was practical as well as spiritual: people sought health, protection, success in conflict, favourable weather or help during crises.[Academia]academia.eduAcademia(PDF) Tungaru TraditionsThe paper discusses the anthropological aspects and historical narratives of Tungaru traditions. Evidence from wider Micronesia suggests that ancestral remains, especially skulls, could sometimes play an important role in ritual life. In Kiribati, respect for ancestors extended beyond formal ceremonies into everyday behaviour, reinforcing obligations between generations and strengthening claims of descent and belonging.[Micsem]micsem.orgCongries of SpiritsIn certain parts of Micronesia something close to ancestor worship seems to have been practiced. Sacred Places and Feared Beings
The older religious landscape of Kiribati was filled with spiritually charged locations. Certain stones, groves, stretches of coastline and community spaces were believed to be connected with supernatural beings or ancestral powers. Offending such places could bring illness or misfortune.[Academia]academia.eduAcademia(PDF) Tungaru TraditionsThe paper discusses the anthropological aspects and historical narratives of Tungaru traditions. The traditional meeting house, or maneaba, was especially significant. Although it functioned as a social and political centre, oral traditions linked it to sacred order and ancestral authority. Historical accounts note lingering beliefs that disrespecting parts of the structure could provoke supernatural punishment.[Academia]academia.eduAcademia(PDF) Tungaru TraditionsThe paper discusses the anthropological aspects and historical narratives of Tungaru traditions. Not every spirit was benevolent. Older traditions included ghosts, wandering spirits and feared supernatural forces associated with magic and the unseen world. Oral histories collected in the twentieth century describe widespread belief in invisible agencies capable of influencing everyday life. These beliefs formed part of a broader understanding that the boundary between the living and the dead was permeable rather than absolute.[FK Maddison]fkmaddison.coma pattern of islands book reviewFK MaddisonA Pattern of Islands by Arthur Grimble (book review)9 Apr 2022 — A review of Arthur Grimble's time in The Republic of Kiribati…
Christianity and Older Practices
Christian missionaries arrived in the Gilbert Islands during the nineteenth century and eventually transformed the religious landscape. Conversion was extensive, and modern Kiribati is overwhelmingly Christian. Yet the change was not a simple replacement of one belief system by another.[Wikipedia]WikipediaReligion in KiribatiReligion in Kiribati
Historical studies report that many I-Kiribati initially worried that conversion would require abandoning ancestor veneration and traditional religious practices. Instead, many communities gradually incorporated elements of older belief into Christian life. Respect for ancestors, concern with sacred places and awareness of supernatural influence often survived in altered forms.[eHRAF World Cultures]ehrafworldcultures.yale.edue HRAF World Cultures Spiritual BeliefseHRAF World CulturesSpiritual Beliefs - eHRAF World Culturesby B Kirata · 1985 · Cited by 9 — When Christianity was introduced in the pri…
Researchers examining contemporary Kiribati have found that Christian explanations frequently coexist with older ideas about spirits, magic and ancestral powers. Why These Beliefs Still Matter
Older Kiribati spirit traditions remain important because they preserve ideas about identity, migration and belonging. Stories about ancestral spirits explain how communities understand their origins, why certain lands are significant and how people are connected across generations.[Kiribati Tourism]kiribatitourism.gov.kiKiribati TourismHistory – Page 1000 – Kiribati For TravellersMany people in Kiribati believe their ancestors to be spirits, some from Sam…
For folklorists and historians, these traditions also reveal how myth and genealogy overlap in Pacific cultures. A revered ancestor could be remembered simultaneously as a historical founder, a clan protector and a supernatural being. The result is a rich spiritual landscape in which history, family memory and sacred tradition are woven together.[scispace.com]scispace.comIn their own words: history and society in Gilbertese oral…Although most rituals and spells are associated with a particular g…
Even in a predominantly Christian nation, ancestral spirits and the older world of the anti continue to occupy an important place in cultural memory. They remain among the most distinctive features of Kiribati’s traditional belief heritage, linking present-day island communities with stories that reach back through generations of oral tradition.[yale.edu]ehrafworldcultures.yale.edue HRAF World Cultures Spiritual BeliefseHRAF World CulturesSpiritual Beliefs - eHRAF World Culturesby B Kirata · 1985 · Cited by 9 — When Christianity was introduced in the pri…
