Introduction

Moldova’s winter folklore is not confined to old storybooks or museum displays. It is still performed in village streets, courtyards and family homes through a cycle of Christmas and New Year customs that combine song, ritual, theatre and disguise. The most important of these traditions are the Christmas carolling rounds carried out by organised groups of singers and the masked performances that appear around the turn of the year. Together they show how folklore functions as a living social practice: it blesses households, renews community ties, marks the passage from one year to the next and gives traditional beliefs a visible place in modern life. UNESCO recognition of men’s Christmas carolling has highlighted the continuing importance of these customs, but their real significance lies in the fact that they are still enacted by communities rather than simply remembered.[Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgIntangible Cultural HeritageMen's group Colindat, Christmas-time ritualEach year before Christmas, groups of young men gather in villages…

Men’s Christmas Carolling and Household Blessing

Among Moldova’s most respected winter customs is the Christmas carolling tradition known as colindat. In villages across the country, groups of young men prepare in advance, learning songs, organising their route and observing local rules about who may participate. On Christmas Eve they travel from house to house, singing ritual songs tailored to the household they are visiting. Hosts reward them with food, bread, gifts or money, but the exchange is about more than hospitality. The singers are understood to bring blessings, good fortune and social recognition to the families they visit.[Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgIntangible Cultural HeritageMen's group Colindat, Christmas-time ritualEach year before Christmas, groups of young men gather in villages…

The songs themselves are often highly specific. Some are intended for household heads, others for children, and some are directed towards unmarried young women. UNESCO’s description of the tradition notes that special songs may be performed for eligible girls, expressing wishes for future marriage and prosperity. In this way the ritual links personal hopes to the wider wellbeing of the community.[Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgIntangible Cultural HeritageMen's group Colindat, Christmas-time ritualEach year before Christmas, groups of young men gather in villages…

What makes the custom particularly important as folklore is the way knowledge passes between generations. Older former leaders train younger performers, teaching melodies, words and ritual etiquette. The event is therefore both a performance and a form of cultural education. Rather than existing as a fixed relic from the past, it survives because each generation actively learns and recreates it.[Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgIntangible Cultural HeritageMen's group Colindat, Christmas-time ritualEach year before Christmas, groups of young men gather in villages…

Moldovan winter customs also preserve older beliefs about the relationship between the living, the household and the spiritual world. Ethnographic descriptions note practices such as preparing ritual breads, setting symbolic foods on the Christmas table and observing customs connected with ancestors and household prosperity. These elements reveal how Christian celebration became intertwined with older seasonal ideas about blessing, fertility and renewal.[Moldova Travel]moldova.traveln Culture and TraditionsWe have a variety of customs for the winter holidays. Goat, Horse, Stork and Other Masked Games

If Christmas carolling is the solemn side of Moldova’s winter folklore, the masked performances of the New Year season are its most dramatic and theatrical expression. Around New Year, groups of performers appear wearing elaborate costumes and animal masks. They travel through villages performing dances, comic scenes and ritual dramas that combine entertainment with symbolic meaning.[Moldpres]moldpres.mdMen's caroling groups, tradition, spirituality at PalancaMen's caroling groups, tradition, spirituality at Palanca…January 11, 2026 — 11 Jan 2026 — Men's caroling groups represent an…Published: January 11, 2026

The best-known character is the Goat. In many performances the Goat appears to die and then return to life, a sequence commonly interpreted by folklorists as a symbolic representation of seasonal renewal and the return of fertility after winter. Loud bells, whips, drums and vigorous dancing accompany the performance. The noise is traditionally understood as a way of driving away harmful influences and welcoming the new year.[Wikipedia]WikipediaRomanian traditional musicRomanian traditional music

Other animal figures also appear in different local traditions:

  • The Horse often features in energetic dance performances and processions.
  • The Bear appears in some communities as a powerful and imposing figure associated with strength and renewal.
  • The Stork and other bird characters may be included in local variants, reflecting the importance of animals in folk symbolism and seasonal storytelling.
  • Hybrid comic figures, combining human and animal traits, frequently provide humour and social satire.[Moldpres]moldpres.mdMen's caroling groups, tradition, spirituality at PalancaMen's caroling groups, tradition, spirituality at Palanca…January 11, 2026 — 11 Jan 2026 — Men's caroling groups represent an…Published: January 11, 2026

These performances are not merely costume parades. They function as a form of folk theatre. Performers act out scenes, exchange jokes, dance, sing and interact with spectators. The boundary between audience and performer is often blurred, turning the entire village into a temporary stage. Through masks and role-playing, ordinary social rules can be relaxed for a brief period, allowing communities to celebrate, criticise and renew themselves at the same time.[Moldpres]moldpres.mdMen's caroling groups, tradition, spirituality at PalancaMen's caroling groups, tradition, spirituality at Palanca…January 11, 2026 — 11 Jan 2026 — Men's caroling groups represent an…Published: January 11, 2026

Why Masks Matter in Folk Tradition

Masks occupy a special place in Moldovan winter customs because they transform familiar people into symbolic beings. A neighbour becomes a goat, a horse or another larger-than-life character. This transformation allows ritual performers to represent forces that stand outside ordinary daily life: fertility, luck, abundance, chaos, danger and renewal.

Many scholars connect such masked traditions with very old seasonal customs that long predate the modern era. Although the meanings attached to them have changed over time, their role remains remarkably consistent. They appear at the turning point of the year, when communities symbolically leave behind the old cycle and enter a new one. The performance itself becomes a ritual crossing of that threshold.[Wikipedia]WikipediaRomanian traditional musicRomanian traditional music

Importantly, participants today do not necessarily understand every detail in the same way their ancestors might have done. Some view the customs as expressions of local identity, others as religious celebrations, cultural heritage or simply enjoyable community events. Folklore survives precisely because it can carry multiple meanings at once.[Moldpres]moldpres.mdMen's caroling groups, tradition, spirituality at PalancaMen's caroling groups, tradition, spirituality at Palanca…January 11, 2026 — 11 Jan 2026 — Men's caroling groups represent an…Published: January 11, 2026

How Winter Ritual Became Recognised Heritage

The international recognition of Moldova’s winter traditions reflects their continuing vitality. In 2013, UNESCO inscribed the men’s group Christmas carolling ritual on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognising the tradition as a shared cultural practice of Moldova and Romania. UNESCO highlighted its role in transmitting values, strengthening community bonds and preserving cultural identity.[Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgIntangible Cultural HeritageMen's group Colindat, Christmas-time ritualEach year before Christmas, groups of young men gather in villages…

Recognition did not create the tradition; rather, it acknowledged a practice that communities had maintained for generations. UNESCO documentation includes examples from Moldovan villages where new groups of carollers continue to form and where ritual breads, songs and household visits remain part of the seasonal calendar.[Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgRehearsal of a men's group in Calarasii Vechi, Calarasi coutny. The survival of these customs through the nineteenth century, the Soviet period and the post-Soviet era is especially significant. Political systems changed, village life transformed and many people migrated to towns or abroad, yet winter ritual performance remained one of the strongest ways of expressing local identity. Today festivals, cultural institutions and tourism initiatives often showcase these traditions, but their deepest roots remain in community participation.[Moldpres]moldpres.mdMen's caroling groups, tradition, spirituality at PalancaMen's caroling groups, tradition, spirituality at Palanca…January 11, 2026 — 11 Jan 2026 — Men's caroling groups represent an…Published: January 11, 2026

Why Moldova’s Winter Folklore Still Performs

Many countries preserve folklore through archives, recordings and museum collections. Moldova certainly has those resources, but its winter customs demonstrate something more unusual: folklore that still expects active participation. A Christmas carol is not merely a song to be listened to; it is a blessing delivered at a doorway. A goat mask is not simply an object; it becomes meaningful when someone dances inside it. The tradition exists because people continue to perform it.

For that reason, Moldova’s winter folklore offers one of the clearest examples of living tradition in Eastern Europe. The carollers, masked dancers and ritual visitors who move through villages each winter are not reenacting a distant past. They are renewing a cultural practice that continues to connect households, neighbours and generations at the darkest point of the year.[unesco.org]ich.unesco.orgIntangible Cultural HeritageMen's group Colindat, Christmas-time ritualEach year before Christmas, groups of young men gather in villages…
