Introduction
In Mauritius, folklore does not survive only in stories told beside a fire or in books of legends. It also lives in song, dance, weddings and family gatherings. Two of the island’s most important traditions, Sega and Geet-Gawai, show how oral culture is carried from one generation to the next through performance rather than written texts. Both are recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, yet their importance goes far beyond official recognition. They remain active social practices through which Mauritians remember ancestry, express identity, celebrate community and pass on cultural knowledge.[ICH UNESCO]ich.unesco.orgOpen source on unesco.org.
Unlike folklore that survives mainly as historical memory, Sega and Geet-Gawai continue to be performed in homes, villages, celebrations and public events. They demonstrate that folklore can be a living process: people sing inherited songs, improvise new verses, teach dance movements, repeat ritual actions and adapt traditions to modern life while keeping links to the past.[UNESCO]unesco.orgdocument 3665Each solo singer improvises lyrics, while a frame drum, box rattle and…Read more…
Sega as Creole Memory and Performance
Sega is one of the most recognisable cultural expressions in Mauritius. Although now embraced as a national symbol, its roots lie in the experiences of enslaved African and Malagasy communities during the colonial period. Historians and cultural researchers have long linked the tradition to communities who used music, dance and communal gatherings to express emotions, preserve memory and maintain social bonds under conditions of oppression.[melodigging.com]melodigging.comSega MauricienSega mauricien (Mauritian sega) is the creole dance‑music of Mauritius, born among enslaved African and Malagasy…
Traditional Mauritian Sega is more than a musical style. UNESCO describes it as a complete performing art involving singing, drumming, dancing and improvisation. A lead singer often creates or adapts lyrics during performance, while percussion instruments maintain the rhythm and dancers respond with movements that are instantly recognisable to Mauritians. The performance is participatory rather than passive: people learn by watching, joining in and imitating experienced performers.[unesco.org]ich.unesco.orgOpen source on unesco.org.
This is where Sega functions as folklore. The songs often carry humour, social commentary, local observations and collective memories. Instead of preserving a fixed text, the tradition preserves a way of telling stories and reflecting on everyday life. New lyrics can be added, old themes can be revisited and community concerns can be woven into performances. The folklore survives because the form itself remains alive.[unesco.org]unesco.orgdocument 3665Each solo singer improvises lyrics, while a frame drum, box rattle and…Read more…
Many scholars also note that Sega became an important vehicle for remembering the history of slavery and Creole identity. Certain songs and performances evoke ancestral suffering, resistance and survival, transforming music into a form of cultural memory. In this sense, Sega serves a role similar to oral epics or historical ballads elsewhere in the world: it keeps important collective experiences emotionally present even when they are not formally taught.[lu.se]lup.lub.lu.send University PublicationsA study of remembrance of chosen traumas in Mauritiusby B Anthony · 2024 — Given the central nature of slaver…
Why performance matters more than text
A written folk tale can survive unchanged for centuries, but Sega depends on people gathering together. Skills are traditionally passed on through observation, participation and repetition. Children hear the rhythms at family events, watch older dancers and gradually absorb the tradition without formal lessons. UNESCO specifically identifies imitation and participation as key methods of transmission.[UNESCO]unesco.orgdocument 3665Each solo singer improvises lyrics, while a frame drum, box rattle and…Read more…
This means that the folklore is carried not only in lyrics but also in:
- Dance movements and body language.
- Musical rhythms and percussion techniques.
- Shared memories associated with celebrations.
- Humour, teasing and social commentary.
- Knowledge of when and how performances should take place.[ICH UNESCO]ich.unesco.orgOpen source on unesco.org.
Geet-Gawai in the Wedding House
If Sega illustrates Creole cultural memory, Geet-Gawai demonstrates how folklore survives through family ritual. Practised mainly within Mauritius’s Bhojpuri-speaking community, Geet-Gawai is a traditional pre-wedding ceremony combining prayer, music, dance and communal participation. UNESCO inscribed it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.[unesco.org]ich.unesco.orgBhojpuri folk songs in Mauritius, Geet-GawaiGeet-Gawai is a pre-wedding ceremony that combines rituals, prayer, songs, music an…
Traditionally held at the home of the bride or groom, Geet-Gawai brings together relatives, neighbours and friends. Ritual actions are accompanied by songs performed collectively, particularly by women. Participants sing devotional and celebratory songs, conduct symbolic wedding preparations and eventually move into dance and festive performance.[unesco.org]unesco.orgdocument 4367Bhojpuri Folk Songs In Mauritius, Geet-Gawai17 Nov 2016 — Geet-Gawai is a traditional, pre-wedding ceremony combining rituals, pray…
For folklorists, the significance of Geet-Gawai lies in the way it embeds cultural knowledge within a social event. The songs are not simply entertainment. They carry memories of migration, family values, religious traditions and community relationships. Through repeated performance, each wedding becomes a moment of cultural transmission. Younger participants learn songs, customs and expectations by taking part rather than reading instructions.[rsisinternational.org]rsisinternational.orgOpen source on rsisinternational.org.
A tradition shaped by women
One of the most distinctive features of Geet-Gawai is the central role traditionally played by women. Female relatives and neighbours have historically acted as custodians of the songs and ceremonies, preserving repertoires across generations. This has made the wedding house an important space for oral transmission.[unesco.org]unesco.orgdocument 4367Bhojpuri Folk Songs In Mauritius, Geet-Gawai17 Nov 2016 — Geet-Gawai is a traditional, pre-wedding ceremony combining rituals, pray…
The songs preserve more than ritual formulas. They contain blessings, humour, playful exchanges, emotional advice and commentary on marriage and family life. In this way, Geet-Gawai resembles many wedding-song traditions around the world while retaining a distinctly Mauritian history shaped by descendants of Indian indentured labourers.[dharmictimes.mu]dharmictimes.mugeet gawai unesco celebration mauritiusGeet-Gawai UNESCO celebration Mauritius21 Nov 2025 — This traditional pre-wedding ceremony—filled with devotional songs, folk melodies, p…
Over time, the practice has expanded beyond private homes. Public performances, cultural festivals and heritage events now showcase Geet-Gawai to wider audiences, yet the family-centred ceremony remains the tradition’s cultural heart.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
UNESCO Heritage and Everyday Transmission
UNESCO recognition has helped bring international attention to both Sega and Geet-Gawai, but neither tradition was created by heritage programmes. They were already living practices before their inscription and continue to depend on community participation. UNESCO’s listings acknowledge that these traditions are transmitted through practice, performance and social interaction rather than through formal archives alone.[ICH UNESCO]ich.unesco.orgOpen source on unesco.org.

At the same time, heritage recognition raises familiar questions. How can traditions remain spontaneous when they are placed on stages? Can a wedding song remain a community practice when it becomes a public performance? These debates are common across intangible heritage programmes worldwide, and Mauritius faces them as well. Yet the continued use of Sega at celebrations and Geet-Gawai at weddings suggests that both traditions still derive their strength from everyday participation rather than official status alone.[tandfonline.com]tandfonline.comTaylor & Francis OnlineFull article: Safeguarding sega: transmission, inscription…by L Jeffery · 2019 · Cited by 16 — The first is th…
How Mauritian Folklore Continues to Live
Sega and Geet-Gawai reveal an important truth about Mauritian folklore: some traditions survive not because they are preserved in museums but because people continue to use them. A Sega performance can carry memories of slavery, community life and Creole identity. A Geet-Gawai gathering can pass wedding customs, songs and family knowledge to a new generation. Neither tradition depends on a fixed script. Both depend on people singing, dancing, remembering and participating together.[folkknowledgeplace.org]folkknowledgeplace.orgChosen Traumas of Mauritian History Evoked in Sega Music3 Jun 2025 — In Mauritius, sega music is the national musical genre closely attac…
For that reason, these traditions are among the clearest examples of living folklore in Mauritius. They show that folklore is not only about old stories from the past. It is also about the cultural practices that allow a society to keep telling its stories in the present.[ICH UNESCO]ich.unesco.orgOpen source on unesco.org.
