Introduction
Kazakh folklore is often described through its heroes, legends and sacred landscapes, but one of its defining features is the way stories are performed. In a society shaped for centuries by mobility across the steppe, cultural memory had to be portable. Genealogies, moral lessons, historical memories, local legends and heroic narratives travelled in the voices of poets and singers and in the sound of the dombra, the iconic two-stringed lute of Kazakhstan. Rather than existing primarily as written texts, many of the country’s most important traditions survived through public performance, improvisation and musical storytelling.[e-Knowledge Center]archive.unesco-ichcap.orgOne of the main branches of the Great Silk Road is.Read more…
Three closely connected traditions illustrate this performance-centred world: Aitysh (or Aitys), the improvised poetic contest; dombra kuy, instrumental compositions that often carry narrative meaning; and the performance of heroic epics by specialist singers and storytellers. Together they reveal how folklore in Kazakhstan functions not merely as a collection of stories but as a living social practice in which memory, identity, entertainment and commentary merge.[unesco.org]ich.unesco.orgUNESCO Intangible Cultural HeritageAitysh/Aitys, art of improvisationAitysh/Aitys is a contest centred on improvised oral poetry spoken o…
Why Oral Performance Became Central to Kazakh Culture
For much of their history, Kazakhs lived within a nomadic or semi-nomadic pastoral culture. Communities moved seasonally, and cultural knowledge needed forms that could travel easily. Songs, poetic formulae, proverbs, genealogies and epic narratives could be memorised and transmitted without libraries or permanent institutions. This encouraged the development of highly skilled performers whose role extended far beyond entertainment.[e-Knowledge Center]archive.unesco-ichcap.orgOne of the main branches of the Great Silk Road is.Read more…
The traditional storyteller, singer or poet was often a keeper of collective memory. Performers preserved clan histories, recalled notable events, celebrated heroes, criticised social failings and expressed community values. Because performances took place before audiences, oral traditions remained flexible. Stories could be adapted, expanded or reinterpreted while still retaining recognisable core themes. This flexibility helped folklore survive periods of political and social change, including Russian imperial expansion, Soviet cultural policies and the transition to independent Kazakhstan.[unesco-ichcap.org]archive.unesco-ichcap.orgOne of the main branches of the Great Silk Road is.Read more…
Aitysh: The Public Art of Verbal Combat
Among the most distinctive forms of Kazakh oral performance is Aitysh, an improvised contest between poets known as akyns. UNESCO describes it as a competition in which performers improvise sung or spoken poetry while accompanying themselves on traditional instruments, usually the dombra in Kazakhstan. The performers sit opposite each other and engage in a verbal duel before an audience. Topics may be suggested by spectators, and success depends on wit, originality, rhythm, musical skill and the ability to respond instantly to an opponent’s arguments.[UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgUNESCO Intangible Cultural HeritageAitysh/Aitys, art of improvisationAitysh/Aitys is a contest centred on improvised oral poetry spoken o…
Unlike a prepared poetry recital, Aitysh unfolds in real time. Participants must compose verses on the spot while responding to challenges, jokes, criticism and philosophical reflections from their rival. Humour is important, but so is social commentary. UNESCO notes that Aitysh frequently addresses contemporary issues affecting communities, making it both a traditional art form and a public forum.[UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgUNESCO Intangible Cultural HeritageAitysh/Aitys, art of improvisationAitysh/Aitys is a contest centred on improvised oral poetry spoken o…
This combination of performance and debate helps explain why Aitysh occupies such an important place in Kazakh folklore. The contest preserves traditional poetic techniques while allowing performers to discuss modern concerns. A skilled akyn is valued not only for artistic talent but also for intelligence, memory and the ability to articulate communal values.[UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgUNESCO Intangible Cultural HeritageAitysh/Aitys, art of improvisationAitysh/Aitys is a contest centred on improvised oral poetry spoken o…
The tradition is shared with neighbouring Kyrgyzstan, reflecting the wider cultural connections of Central Asia. Aitysh as Living Folklore
One reason Aitysh remains significant is that it continues to evolve. Traditional themes such as honour, hospitality, ancestry and morality coexist with discussions of education, politics, environmental issues and social change. This adaptability prevents the form from becoming a museum piece. Instead, it remains a living mechanism through which folklore engages with contemporary life.[UNESCO]unesco.orgdocument 4028Aitysh, Aitys, Art of Improvisation | Intangible Heritage10 Nov 2015 — Aitysh/Aitys is a contest between two people on poetry impro…
The continuing vitality of the tradition is demonstrated by modern international events. In 2025, Kazakh and Kyrgyz akyns performed an international Aitys at UNESCO headquarters in Paris to mark the tenth anniversary of the tradition’s inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The event showed that a performance form rooted in steppe culture can still attract audiences on a global stage.[gov.kz]gov.kzernment of KazakhstanHistoric International Aitys Brings Together Kazakh and…An international Aitys – the traditional poetic duel o…
Dombra Kuy: When Music Becomes Narrative
If Aitysh tells stories through words, dombra kuy often tells them through music. A kuy is a short instrumental composition performed on the dombra, the pear-shaped, long-necked, two-stringed instrument that has become one of Kazakhstan’s strongest cultural symbols. UNESCO describes dombra kuy as both a classical and improvised musical tradition intended to connect listeners with their historical roots and cultural memory.[UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgUNESCO Intangible Cultural HeritageKazakh traditional art of Dombra KuyThe art of DombraKuy refers to a short solo composition performed…
The remarkable aspect of kuy is that many pieces are linked to specific stories, legends, events or emotional experiences. Performances are frequently accompanied by explanations that describe the origin of the composition or the narrative behind it. In this sense, the music functions as a form of storytelling even when no lyrics are present. UNESCO explicitly notes that dombra kuy performances are often associated with narrated stories and legends.[UNESCO]unesco.orgdocument 3670Kazakh Traditional Art of Dombra Kuy | Intangible HeritageNov 6, 2014 — The art of Dombra Kuy refers to a solo composition performe…
For traditional audiences, understanding a kuy often involved knowing the tale connected with it. A melody could evoke a heroic deed, a tragic loss, a journey across the steppe, an encounter with nature or the memory of a respected individual. The music acted as a compressed narrative form, capable of carrying cultural meaning without lengthy verbal explanation.[Qazaq Culture]qazaqculture.comQazaq CultureIntangible heritageThe art of performing kuy on dombra is a short solo composition performed on a traditional pear-shaped tw…
The Storytelling Power of Instrumental Music
In many folklore traditions, narrative depends on words. Kazakh kuy demonstrates a different possibility: music itself can become a vessel for memory. Specific performance styles, rhythms and motifs may signal emotional states or recall known stories. Listeners familiar with the associated legend can mentally reconstruct the narrative while hearing only the instrumental performance.[Qazaq Culture]qazaqculture.comQazaq CultureIntangible heritageThe art of performing kuy on dombra is a short solo composition performed on a traditional pear-shaped tw…
This helps explain why UNESCO identifies dombra kuy not merely as a musical practice but as an important means of social communication and cultural transmission. Performances occur at family gatherings, celebrations and community events, strengthening social cohesion while preserving links to earlier generations.[qazaqculture.com]qazaqculture.comQazaq CultureIntangible heritageThe art of performing kuy on dombra is a short solo composition performed on a traditional pear-shaped tw…
The symbolic status of the dombra extends beyond music itself. The instrument has become a national emblem, representing continuity between contemporary Kazakhstan and the oral traditions of the steppe. National Dombra Day celebrations further reinforce this association between the instrument, storytelling and cultural identity.[Government of Kazakhstan]gov.kzernment of KazakhstanUNESCO Congratulates Kazakhstan on National Dombra…Ohinata underlines that “the dombra kuy is a part of the so…
Heroic Epics as Portable Cultural Memory
The longest and most elaborate form of Kazakh oral storytelling is the heroic epic. These narratives, performed by specialist singers and reciters, preserve stories of legendary heroes, battles, loyalty, kinship and communal survival. Although individual epics vary, they often combine historical memory with poetic imagination, creating narratives that are neither straightforward history nor pure fantasy.[Redalyc.org]redalyc.orgKazakh historical epics and epical traditionby K KABDESHOVA · 2019 · Cited by 2 — The subject of this research is the historical epics ma…
Epic performers are traditionally known by titles related to singing and recitation, including terms often translated as bard, singer or storyteller. Their task was not simply to repeat a text. Performance required mastery of formulaic language, melody, rhythm and narrative structure. Studies of Kazakh epic poetry show that performers relied on traditional formulas and verse patterns that allowed lengthy narratives to be recreated during performance rather than memorised word for word.[Oral Tradition]journal.oraltradition.orgOral Tradition Formulaic Diction in Kazakh Epic PoetryOral TraditionFormulaic Diction in Kazakh Epic Poetry - Oral Tradition Journalby K Reichl · 1989 · Cited by 12 — This verse-line goes bac…
This method resembles epic traditions found elsewhere in the world, yet it developed distinctive Central Asian characteristics. The singer could adapt details, expand scenes or emphasise themes relevant to a particular audience while preserving the recognised identity of the epic. As a result, oral epics remained dynamic rather than fixed.[Oral Tradition]journal.oraltradition.orgOral Tradition Formulaic Diction in Kazakh Epic PoetryOral TraditionFormulaic Diction in Kazakh Epic Poetry - Oral Tradition Journalby K Reichl · 1989 · Cited by 12 — This verse-line goes bac…
The Role of the Jyrau
A particularly important figure in Kazakh oral culture is the jyrau, often described as a bard, poet and singer. Historical accounts portray jyrau not only as performers but also as advisers, commentators and preservers of communal wisdom. Their influence extended beyond artistic performance into social and political life.[Abai Center]abaicenter.orgGiven the widespread traditions of oral literature.Read moreAbai CenterJyrau – poets, warriors and strategic minds of the SteppesKazakh bards, or jyrau, were folk poets and singers of the steppes s…
The jyrau tradition demonstrates how storytelling functioned within Kazakh society. Epic performance was not merely entertainment after work. Korkyt Ata and the Meeting of Music and Epic Tradition
One of the most important figures connecting music and storytelling in the wider Kazakh tradition is Korkyt Ata. Remembered as a legendary sage, musician and storyteller, Korkyt occupies a special place in the epic heritage shared across parts of Central Asia and the Turkic world. UNESCO’s inscription of the heritage of Dede Qorqud/Korkyt Ata highlights a tradition built around heroic legends, stories and associated musical compositions transmitted through oral performance.[UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgUNESCO Intangible Cultural HeritageHeritage of Dede Qorqud/Korkyt Ata/Dede Korkut, epic…The epic culture, folk tales and music of Dede…
In Kazakh cultural memory, Korkyt is often associated with the idea that music can preserve wisdom and challenge mortality. Stories about him blur the boundaries between history, legend, philosophy and folklore. The persistence of these narratives illustrates how epic storytelling and musical performance frequently overlap rather than existing as separate traditions.[«Қазақстан тарихы» порталы]e-history.kzA great thinker, philosopher, zhyrau-narrator.Read more«Қазақстан тарихы» порталыA Legend about Korkyt AtaAugust 18, 2018 — 18 Aug 2018 — Korkyt is a legendary historical person who left a ric…
How These Traditions Survive Today
Modern Kazakhstan has schools, conservatories, recording technologies and digital media, yet oral performance remains a visible part of cultural life. Aitysh competitions continue to attract audiences. Dombra performers study both historical and contemporary repertoire. Epic traditions are documented by researchers, taught to younger generations and presented at festivals. UNESCO recognition has also increased international awareness of these practices.[UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage]ich.unesco.orgUNESCO Intangible Cultural HeritageAitysh/Aitys, art of improvisationAitysh/Aitys is a contest centred on improvised oral poetry spoken o…
What makes these traditions distinctive is that they are not merely preserved as historical artefacts. They continue to function as mechanisms for transmitting memory and identity. Whether through an improvised poetic duel, an instrumental composition linked to a legend, or a lengthy heroic narrative performed before an audience, Kazakh folklore remains deeply connected to performance. The story is not separate from the act of telling it. In the Kazakh tradition, the performance itself is often where the folklore truly lives.[unesco.org]ich.unesco.orgUNESCO Intangible Cultural HeritageAitysh/Aitys, art of improvisationAitysh/Aitys is a contest centred on improvised oral poetry spoken o…
