Introduction
Many of Fiji’s most important traditional stories are inseparable from real places. Mountains, caves, reefs, headlands, abandoned villages and ancient pathways appear not merely as settings but as active parts of a sacred landscape through which ancestors, spirits and the dead were believed to travel. In older Fijian belief, death was often understood as the beginning of a journey rather than an immediate arrival in another world. The soul moved along recognised routes, passed through specific landmarks, encountered supernatural dangers, and eventually reached the realm of spirits known as Bulu or related spirit domains. These traditions connected geography, genealogy and religion into a single system of meaning that helped explain both the landscape and the fate of human beings after death.[com.fj]fijitimes.com.fjFiji Times Death, ghosts and the afterlifeFiji TimesDeath, ghosts and the afterlifeJuly 18, 2021 — 18 Jul 2021 — According to Mr Gifford, after death, the souls of the departed we…
Unlike many religious traditions that place the afterlife entirely beyond the visible world, Fijian folklore frequently locates the route of the dead within familiar terrain. Particular cliffs, caves, mountains and coastal points were remembered as stages on a spirit journey. Even today, many of these places retain cultural significance because they preserve links between oral tradition, ancestral memory and local identity.[com.fj]fijitimes.com.fjFiji Times The leaping pointFiji TimesThe leaping pointAugust 13, 2017 — 14 Aug 2017 — The story of the place where the spirits of the dead are said to leap from a c…
Legendary Landscapes as Sacred Geography
Traditional Fijian religion did not sharply separate the spiritual world from the physical one. Certain places were regarded as dwelling places of ancestral beings, local spirits and powerful supernatural forces. Early descriptions of Fijian religion recorded that sacred status was often attached to caves, large trees, isolated forests, unusual rocks, dangerous reef passages and particular stretches of coastline. Such locations were approached with respect because they were believed to be inhabited by spiritual beings capable of protecting, punishing or influencing human communities.[Wikipedia]WikipediaReligion in FijiReligion in Fiji
This attachment of stories to physical locations remains visible in modern archaeological research. Recent work in the Nadroga-Navosa region has shown that oral traditions preserve memories of old settlements, ancestral homes, migration routes and sacred sites that cannot always be reconstructed from archaeological remains alone. Local narratives attached to hillforts and abandoned settlements often function as cultural maps linking present-day communities to ancestral landscapes.[researchgate.net]researchgate.netResearchGate(PDF) Enhancing Oral Tradition in Fiji for the Study of…Stories of origins, place names and beliefs about hillforts as anc…
Because Fiji consists of hundreds of islands connected by sea routes rather than roads, sacred geography developed across both land and water. Reefs, passages through lagoons and coastal headlands acquired mythological significance. The landscape itself became a record of ancestral journeys, spiritual encounters and the movement of souls after death.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearchGate(PDF) Enhancing Oral Tradition in Fiji for the Study of…Stories of origins, place names and beliefs about hillforts as anc…
Nakauvadra and the Spiritual Centre of the Islands
No location is more important in discussions of the Fijian afterlife than the Nakauvadra mountain range in northern Viti Levu. The mountains are closely associated with Degei, the great serpent ancestor and one of the central figures of Fijian mythology.
Older traditions describe Nakauvadra as a place of origins, ancestral power and spiritual authority. It is also repeatedly connected with the journey of the dead. Ethnographic evidence collected from different regions records beliefs that spirits travelled westward toward Nakauvadra or passed through it on their way to the spirit world. Some accounts portray the mountains as a central gathering place where souls moved before continuing toward the final realm of the dead.[edu.au]press-files.anu.edu.auOthers tellDegei's Descendants: Spirits, Place and People in Pre…Myths abound about spirits from the east travelling westward along the appropria…
The association between westward movement and death is particularly striking. In many recorded traditions, the soul’s route leads toward the west or north-west, reflecting a broader Pacific pattern in which the setting sun becomes symbolically linked with the departure of life. Nakauvadra occupies an important place within this symbolic geography because it stands near routes believed to connect the human world with spirit territories beyond ordinary experience.[tianmu.org]tianmu.orgfijian religion the way of the vanuaFijian Religion — The Way of the Vanua23 Jun 2026 — From there, the soul journeys to the realm of the dead, passing through Nakauvadra be…
The continuing importance of Nakauvadra can be seen in both folklore and cultural memory. Modern studies of Fijian oral traditions still identify the mountain range as one of the country’s most significant sacred landscapes.[ResearchGate]researchgate.net282577594 Degei's Descendants Spirits Place and People in Pre Cession FijiResearchGate(PDF) Degei's Descendants: Spirits, Place and People in…January 1, 2014 — Degei's Descendants: Spirits, Place and People i…
The Journey of the Dead
Traditional accounts rarely describe death as an instantaneous transition. Instead, the deceased entered a complex route known in some sources as the Path of Souls. The spirit often remained near the place of death before beginning a journey toward the spirit world. Along the way it encountered obstacles, tests and supernatural beings.[wikipedia.org]WikipediaSeptember 30, 2002 — Murimuria is part of the underworld. Anthropological descriptions collected from Fiji describe a belief that every island possessed a designated “jumping-off place” where spirits departed from the world of the living. These locations were known as points from which souls began their passage toward the land of spirits. Such places were typically located on western or north-western coasts, again reflecting the symbolic association between death and the direction of the setting sun.[Wikipedia]WikipediaReligion in FijiReligion in Fiji
Some traditions describe the soul crossing water with the assistance of a supernatural ferryman. Others portray dangerous encounters with beings who attempted to obstruct progress. The journey was therefore both geographical and moral. The deceased was not simply transported elsewhere; the soul had to navigate a route shaped by spiritual challenges.[Fiji Times]fijitimes.com.fjFiji Times Death, ghosts and the afterlifeFiji TimesDeath, ghosts and the afterlifeJuly 18, 2021 — 18 Jul 2021 — According to Mr Gifford, after death, the souls of the departed we…
These stories vary considerably between regions, illustrating the diversity of Fijian oral tradition. Researchers have long noted that beliefs about the afterlife were not completely uniform across the archipelago. Nevertheless, the recurring themes of spirit roads, sacred departure points, western destinations and judgement after death appear across many recorded traditions.[com.fj]fijitimes.com.fjFiji Times Death, ghosts and the afterlifeFiji TimesDeath, ghosts and the afterlifeJuly 18, 2021 — 18 Jul 2021 — According to Mr Gifford, after death, the souls of the departed we…
Naicobocobo and the Leaping Point of Spirits
Among the most famous sacred places associated with the afterlife is Naicobocobo in Bua, on Vanua Levu. Local tradition identifies this area as one of the final departure points used by the spirits of the dead.
Accounts recorded from the region describe a cliff known as Nacadruta where souls were believed to make their final leap before continuing into the spirit world. According to local narratives, the dead travelled through a sequence of locations before reaching this point. Village traditions preserved detailed memories of these routes and of the rituals associated with guiding spirits along the correct path.[Fiji Times]fijitimes.com.fjFiji Times The leaping pointFiji TimesThe leaping pointAugust 13, 2017 — 14 Aug 2017 — The story of the place where the spirits of the dead are said to leap from a c…
What makes Naicobocobo especially interesting is its combination of folklore and physical geography. Visitors encounter an actual cliff overlooking the sea rather than an abstract mythological location. This tangible connection between landscape and story illustrates a characteristic feature of Fijian belief: sacred narratives are frequently anchored in identifiable places that remain visible in the modern world.[Fiji Times]fijitimes.com.fjFiji Times The leaping pointFiji TimesThe leaping pointAugust 13, 2017 — 14 Aug 2017 — The story of the place where the spirits of the dead are said to leap from a c…
Researchers have often noted parallels between such sites and other Polynesian and Pacific “leaping places” where spirits were believed to depart for the afterlife. While the details differ, the broader concept of a geographical threshold between worlds appears across Oceania. Naicobocobo represents Fiji’s most widely discussed example of this tradition.[Fiji Times]fijitimes.com.fjFiji Times The leaping pointFiji TimesThe leaping pointAugust 13, 2017 — 14 Aug 2017 — The story of the place where the spirits of the dead are said to leap from a c…
Caves, Burial Places and Portals to the Spirit World
Caves occupy a special place in Fijian folklore because they frequently serve as points of contact between human and supernatural realms.
Many traditional burial sites were located in caves, especially those reserved for chiefs and important figures. Historical records indicate that such locations were often kept secret to prevent desecration by enemies and to preserve spiritual balance. The association between caves, ancestors and sacred power made them important features of the spiritual landscape.[Fiji Times]fijitimes.com.fjFiji Times DISCOVERING FIJI | Fiji's ancient burial cavesFiji TimesDISCOVERING FIJI | Fiji's ancient burial cavesFebruary 1, 2026 — 1 Feb 2026 — In Fiji, burial caves were linked to ancestral id…
Some traditions place Degei himself within a cave in the Nakauvadra region. Other accounts describe newly dead souls passing through caves before judgement. The repeated appearance of caves in afterlife traditions suggests that they were imagined as liminal spaces—neither fully part of the ordinary world nor entirely separate from it.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
The famous Naihehe Cave system in western Viti Levu also carries a long reputation as a place associated with worship, refuge and sacred activity. Although modern tourism often highlights its dramatic appearance, local traditions preserve memories of its ritual significance and its connection with older spiritual practices.[Facebook]facebook.comNaihehe translates to 'a place to get lostBut every year…Located in Fiji's Navosa Province, the Naihehe Caves are a historically significant site, used in the past by indigeno…
Degei’s Judgement and the Destinations of the Dead
The journey through sacred landscapes ultimately leads to judgement. In many versions of Fijian tradition, Degei evaluates souls after they complete their passage through the spirit world.
Accounts differ in detail, but many describe worthy souls reaching Burotu, a blessed realm associated with abundance and happiness. Others are sent to Murimuria, a less desirable destination often portrayed as a place where the consequences of earthly behaviour are experienced. The important point is that movement through the landscape of the dead culminates in a moral assessment. Geography and ethics are therefore intertwined within the traditional narrative.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
Some traditions place this judgement after the soul has passed through caves connected with Degei. Others emphasise the westward journey and arrival in Bulu before judgement occurs. Regional variations are common, but the central role of Degei as judge of the dead remains one of the most enduring themes in Fijian mythology.[wikipedia.org]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
Oral Tradition, Archaeology and Cultural Heritage
Today, most Fijians practise Christianity, Hinduism or Islam, yet sacred landscapes associated with older traditions remain culturally important. The significance of these places does not depend on universal belief in the literal truth of every story. Instead, they serve as repositories of memory, identity and ancestral connection.
Archaeological research increasingly demonstrates that oral traditions can help explain the meaning of hillforts, abandoned villages and other heritage sites. Stories attached to landscapes often preserve information about settlement history, clan origins and social relationships that might otherwise be lost.[researchgate.net]researchgate.netResearchGate(PDF) Enhancing Oral Tradition in Fiji for the Study of…Stories of origins, place names and beliefs about hillforts as anc…
For this reason, sacred places associated with spirit routes are valuable not only as folklore but also as part of Fiji’s cultural heritage. Locations such as Nakauvadra, Naicobocobo, ancient burial caves and remembered settlement sites continue to link living communities with ancestral narratives. They reveal a worldview in which geography was never merely physical terrain. Mountains, caves, reefs and pathways formed part of a larger sacred map through which ancestors travelled, spirits moved and the dead found their way beyond the visible world.[researchgate.net]researchgate.net282577594 Degei's Descendants Spirits Place and People in Pre Cession FijiResearchGate(PDF) Degei's Descendants: Spirits, Place and People in…January 1, 2014 — Degei's Descendants: Spirits, Place and People i…
