Introduction
Across Bosnia and Herzegovina, large medieval stone tombstones known as stećci stand in fields, forests, mountain pastures and village graveyards. Archaeologists study them as monuments of the late Middle Ages, but local communities have often treated them as something more: landmarks linked to healing, mysterious ancestors, forgotten heroes and the sacred character of the landscape itself. That dual identity is what makes stećci unusual. They are not simply archaeological remains. For centuries they have continued to gather stories, beliefs and local meanings, turning medieval grave markers into living folk monuments. Today they are among the most recognisable symbols of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cultural heritage, yet many of the legends attached to them remain part of village memory and regional folklore.[unesco.org]whc.unesco.orgUNESCO World Heritage CentreStećci Medieval Tombstone GraveyardsThe serial property of 28 component sites includes a selection of 4,000 m…
What stećci are
Stećci are monumental stone tombstones created between roughly the twelfth and sixteenth centuries. Most survive in Bosnia and Herzegovina, although related examples are also found in neighbouring Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia. They appear in many forms, including flat slabs, chest-shaped monuments and elaborate stone sarcophagi decorated with carvings of hunters, dancers, crosses, animals, celestial symbols and geometric patterns. UNESCO’s World Heritage inscription covers twenty-eight selected necropolises containing around 4,000 examples from a much larger surviving population of tens of thousands of stones.[unesco.org]whc.unesco.orgUNESCO World Heritage CentreStećci Medieval Tombstone GraveyardsThe serial property of 28 component sites includes a selection of 4,000 m…
What makes stećci particularly important for folklore is that they occupy a curious position between memory and mystery. Medieval records say surprisingly little about them, and later generations often no longer knew exactly who had built them or whose graves they marked. As historical knowledge faded, storytelling filled the gaps. Folk traditions began explaining the stones through legends of giants, heroes, ancient peoples and supernatural powers.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
Why the stones attracted legends
Many old monuments become centres of folklore when their original purpose is forgotten, and stećci are a classic example. Travellers writing from the sixteenth century onwards encountered impressive stone monuments standing in isolated places but found few reliable explanations for them. As a result, stories developed that treated them as the graves of legendary warriors, noble families, giant ancestors or mysterious peoples who had vanished from the region.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
Several factors encouraged this process:
- Their unusual size made them appear older and more significant than ordinary graves.
- Many stand in remote landscapes where mystery naturally accumulates.
- Their carvings are symbolic and often difficult to interpret.
- Local communities inherited the monuments without necessarily inheriting the historical knowledge behind them.[unesco.org]whc.unesco.orgUNESCO World Heritage CentreStećci Medieval Tombstone GraveyardsThe serial property of 28 component sites includes a selection of 4,000 m…
The result was a folklore-rich environment in which the stones became storytellers’ material. Different villages developed different explanations, and no single legend ever displaced all the others.
Folk beliefs around the stones
Among the most persistent traditions are beliefs that stećci possess healing or protective powers. In some parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, local stories claimed that stone dust gathered from a stećak could help women who struggled to conceive. Similar beliefs held that the stones could improve the health of livestock or protect animals from illness. These traditions treated the monuments less as graves and more as reservoirs of sacred or beneficial power embedded in the landscape.[nekropola.ba]nekropola.baLegends | NekropolaIt is widely believed that tombstone stećci possess healing powers. Other stories describe the monuments as places where unusual events occur. People spoke of mysterious lights, strange sounds or uncanny feelings near isolated necropolises. Such accounts belong to a wider Balkan tradition in which ancient graves, ruins and burial grounds become associated with the supernatural. The stories rarely present specific monsters or ghosts. Instead, the stones themselves are treated as powerful objects whose age and unknown origins command respect.[nekropola.ba]nekropola.baLegends | NekropolaIt is widely believed that tombstone stećci possess healing powers. In some communities, disturbing a stećak was believed to bring misfortune. Whether expressed as a curse, a warning or simple respect for the dead, these traditions helped protect monuments that might otherwise have been quarried for building stone. Such beliefs are common around sacred sites worldwide, but in Bosnia and Herzegovina they became part of the folklore surrounding the medieval tombstones.[nekropola.ba]nekropola.baLegends | NekropolaIt is widely believed that tombstone stećci possess healing powers. Named landscapes and remembered stones
Although stećci occur across the country, certain necropolises have become especially important in cultural memory. Sites such as Radimlja near Stolac are known not only for their artistic carvings but also for the stories that surround them. Local guides, writers and residents often blend historical information with inherited legends, creating narratives that connect the stones to medieval nobles, heroic ancestors and vanished worlds.[UNESCO World Heritage Centre]whc.unesco.orgWorld Heritage Centre Stećci Medieval Tombstone GraveyardsUNESCO World Heritage CentreStećci Medieval Tombstone Graveyards - MapsGeographical data (28); 1504-003, Kalufi in Krekovi, Nevesinje, B…
This blending of history and folklore is significant. Visitors are rarely attracted by archaeology alone. What captures attention is the sense that the stones remain active participants in cultural life. A stećak is simultaneously an artefact, a landmark, a symbol of identity and a source of stories.
The landscape itself contributes to this effect. Many necropolises stand on ridges, beside old roads, near mountain passes or overlooking valleys. Their locations encourage the feeling that they belong to the wider natural environment rather than merely to a cemetery. In folklore terms, they become part of the character of a place.[UNESCO World Heritage Centre]whc.unesco.orgUNESCO World Heritage CentreStećci Medieval Tombstone GraveyardsThe serial property of 28 component sites includes a selection of 4,000 m…
From forgotten graves to heritage symbols
The modern history of stećci is almost as interesting as their medieval origins. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, scholars, artists and national movements increasingly treated them as symbols of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s historical distinctiveness. Because the stones predate many modern political and ethnic divisions, different groups sometimes attempted to claim them as exclusively their own heritage. Researchers now generally emphasise that stećci were used across a diverse medieval society that included multiple religious communities and cultural traditions.[CORDIS]cordis.europa.eu430591 unravelling the secrets of the medieval tombstones in the western balkansUnravelling the secrets of the medieval tombstones in…27 Aug 2021 — Over half a millennium ago, stećci, the tombstones erected i…
Their modern symbolic power extends beyond scholarship. The stones have inspired poetry, visual art, photography and literature. The most famous literary example is the work of poet Mehmedalija Mak Dizdar, whose collection Stone Sleeper helped transform the tombstones into a powerful metaphor for Bosnian memory and identity. Through literature and art, stećci moved from local folklore into national cultural imagination.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
UNESCO recognition in 2016 further strengthened their status as shared heritage. Yet official heritage protection has not erased the legends. Instead, the archaeological and folkloric interpretations now exist side by side. Visitors may learn about medieval burial customs while also hearing stories about healing stones, forgotten heroes and mysterious ancestors.[UNESCO World Heritage Centre]whc.unesco.orgUNESCO World Heritage CentreStećci Medieval Tombstone GraveyardsThe serial property of 28 component sites includes a selection of 4,000 m…
Why the legends still matter
The enduring fascination of stećci comes from the fact that they occupy two worlds at once. Historians see evidence of medieval society. Folklore sees a landscape alive with memory, mystery and inherited belief. Neither perspective fully replaces the other.
For many people in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the stones are reminders that the past survives not only through documents and museums but also through stories. A healing legend, a tale of giants or a warning not to disturb an ancient grave may not provide historical facts, yet such traditions reveal how communities understood and valued the monuments around them.
That is why stećci remain living folk monuments. They are medieval tombstones whose cultural life never truly ended. Centuries after the people buried beneath them were forgotten, the stones continue to generate stories, meanings and connections between landscape, memory and identity.[nekropola.ba]nekropola.baLegends | NekropolaIt is widely believed that tombstone stećci possess healing powers.
