Introduction

In parts of western Burkina Faso, a mask is not simply a carved object. During a performance it becomes the visible form of a spirit, ancestor-linked force, or sacred power that normally remains hidden. Among the Bwa and Bobo peoples, masks are understood through movement, music and ritual action. The carved wood, leaves or fibres matter, but the real event is the appearance of a being that dances, teaches, judges, blesses, escorts the dead, or renews the relationship between the community and the spirit world. For this reason, many researchers describe these traditions as masquerades or spirit performances rather than displays of sculpture. The mask only becomes meaningful when it moves among people and fulfils its ritual role.[smarthistory.org]smarthistory.orgmask nwantantayMask (Nwantantay) (Bwa peoples)24 Sept 2016 — Among the southern Bwa peoples in Burkina Faso, large wooden plank masks are ca…

When a Mask Becomes a Spirit

A common misunderstanding is that the mask itself is worshipped. In Bwa and Bobo traditions, the mask is better understood as a temporary body through which spiritual forces become present. The performer disappears beneath costume, leaves, fibres and wood. What the audience sees is not an individual villager but a spirit acting in public space.[Pacific Lutheran University]plu.eduPacific Lutheran UniversityLearn More: Bwa Mask | African Art CollectionMasks from the peoples of Burkina Faso are traditionally used in…

This transformation is central to the tradition. The dance, music and costume work together to reveal beings that are usually invisible. Performers imitate the movements and character of the spirit represented by the mask. In this sense, the performance is a form of communication between human society and powers associated with nature, morality, ancestors and cosmic order.[Pacific Lutheran University]plu.eduPacific Lutheran UniversityLearn More: Bwa Mask | African Art CollectionMasks from the peoples of Burkina Faso are traditionally used in…

The striking geometric designs found on many Bwa masks are not merely decorative. Researchers note that patterns such as zigzags, checkerboards, crescents and crosses communicate moral teachings and ritual knowledge known within the community. The mask therefore teaches as well as performs.[Wikipedia]WikipediaArt of Burkina FasoArt of Burkina Faso

Plank Masks and Flying Spirits

The most famous Bwa masks are the towering plank masks often called flying-spirit masks. Some rise several metres above the dancer and are painted in bold black, white and red designs. Their dramatic appearance has made them one of the most recognisable artistic traditions of Burkina Faso.[Smarthistory]smarthistory.orgmask nwantantayMask (Nwantantay) (Bwa peoples)24 Sept 2016 — Among the southern Bwa peoples in Burkina Faso, large wooden plank masks are ca…

According to Bwa belief traditions, these masks represent powerful flying spirits connected with the natural world. Such beings are associated with water, wilderness and the forces that exist beyond ordinary human control. Oral accounts describe encounters in which a spirit offered protection to humans and established a relationship with the community. The masks make these otherwise unseen powers visible.[Smarthistory]smarthistory.orgmask nwantantayMask (Nwantantay) (Bwa peoples)24 Sept 2016 — Among the southern Bwa peoples in Burkina Faso, large wooden plank masks are ca…

The performance is as important as the object itself. Dancers carrying the huge planks whirl, leap and spin in ways that make the masks appear almost weightless. The movement suggests the flight and vitality of the spirits being represented. Observers often describe the effect as one of transformation: a wooden structure becomes a living presence through dance.[Smarthistory]smarthistory.orgmask nwantantayMask (Nwantantay) (Bwa peoples)24 Sept 2016 — Among the southern Bwa peoples in Burkina Faso, large wooden plank masks are ca…

Many Bwa masks also take animal forms, including buffalo, hawks, owls and other creatures associated with bush spirits. The dancer’s movements help tell the story of the spirit’s assumed form and character.[101 Last Tribes]101lasttribes.com101 Last Tribes101 Last TribesBwa peopleThese leaf masks frequently represent Dwo in religious ceremonies. Dwo or Do in Ritual Life

Behind many Bwa and Bobo mask traditions stands a sacred spiritual force commonly referred to as Dwo or Do. Although details vary between communities, Dwo is not simply a character from a story. It is a religious principle connected with the ordering of society, the natural world and the passage from childhood to adulthood.[Wikipedia]WikipediaArt of Burkina FasoArt of Burkina Faso

Among the Bobo, religious teachings describe a creator known as Wuro and a cosmic order that humans must maintain. Masks linked to Dwo help restore balance between opposing forces such as village and wilderness, culture and nature, or humanity and the spirit world. Their performances are therefore not entertainment alone but acts that reaffirm the proper order of life.[Wikipedia]WikipediaArt of Burkina FasoArt of Burkina Faso

Some of the most sacred forms associated with Dwo are not wooden masks at all. Bwa and Bobo traditions also use masks made from leaves and plant materials. These are often regarded as especially powerful because they embody a direct connection between human society and the natural world from which spiritual power emerges.[101 Last Tribes]101lasttribes.com101 Last Tribes101 Last TribesBwa peopleThese leaf masks frequently represent Dwo in religious ceremonies. Initiation ceremonies provide one of the clearest examples of how these performances function. Young people learn the meanings of the masks, the responsibilities of adulthood and the moral laws of the community. The appearance of the masks marks stages in this education, turning abstract lessons into memorable encounters with sacred beings.[Wikipedia]WikipediaArt of Burkina FasoArt of Burkina Faso

Funerals, Initiations and Farming Ceremonies

The same masks may appear in several different kinds of ritual, but their purpose changes with the occasion. What unites these events is the belief that the community requires visible contact with spiritual forces at important moments of transition.[The Metropolitan Museum of Art]metmuseum.orgThe Metropolitan Museum of Art Bwa blacksmithThey also dance at agricultural festivities to ensure…Read more…

Funerals

Funerals are among the most important occasions for mask performances. Masks honour the dead, help guide the deceased into the world of the ancestors and reassure the living that the proper rituals have been carried out. The appearance of masks at funerals also demonstrates that death is not simply a personal event but a matter involving the entire community and the unseen world.[The Metropolitan Museum of Art]metmuseum.orgThe Metropolitan Museum of Art Bwa blacksmithThey also dance at agricultural festivities to ensure…Read more…

In Bobo areas, particular masks may attend the funerals of important ritual leaders and elders connected with Dwo. Large funeral gatherings can include elaborate dances that mark the final transition of the deceased into ancestral status.[Wikipedia]WikipediaArt of Burkina FasoArt of Burkina Faso

Initiations

Initiation ceremonies transform children into recognised adults. Masks act as teachers, guardians and embodiments of sacred knowledge. Through repeated appearances over many years, they help introduce successive generations to the responsibilities of community life.[Wikipedia]WikipediaArt of Burkina FasoArt of Burkina Faso

Because initiation knowledge is traditionally restricted, outsiders often see only the public side of these events. Yet the performances remain central to the transmission of cultural memory and religious understanding.[Wikipedia]WikipediaArt of Burkina FasoArt of Burkina Faso

Farming and Seasonal Rituals

Agricultural life provides another major setting for mask performances. Communities dependent on seasonal rains have long linked spiritual well-being with successful harvests. Masks appear during ceremonies intended to encourage fertility, protect crops and maintain harmony between people and the natural forces on which farming depends.[metmuseum.org]metmuseum.orgThe Metropolitan Museum of Art Bwa blacksmithThey also dance at agricultural festivities to ensure…Read more…

Many performances occur during the dry season, particularly before the onset of the rains. How the Tradition Lives Today

Bwa and Bobo mask performances remain active in many communities, although they now exist alongside Islam, Christianity, modern education and national cultural institutions. The masks are also widely recognised as symbols of Burkinabè cultural heritage. Some of the famous Bwa plank-mask designs have even appeared in national imagery and have become internationally known through museums and exhibitions.[High Museum of Art]high.orgHigh Museum of ArtButterfly MaskBwa mask performances are among the most spectacular of all African masquerades and take place during the…

Public festivals such as the Festival International des Masques et des Arts de Dédougou showcase mask traditions from across Burkina Faso. Yet communities often stress that these performances are not merely folklore displays for visitors. Many masks shown at festivals come from living ritual traditions governed by rules about who may wear them, when they may appear and what spiritual responsibilities accompany them.[Kumakonda]kumakonda.comMask ceremonies and festivals in Burkina FasoMask ceremonies and festivals in Burkina FasoMay 8, 2026 — 8 May 2026 — Mask ceremonies and festivals in Burkina Faso are fundam…Published: May 8, 2026

This tension between heritage and ritual is part of what makes Bwa and Bobo masks so compelling. To museum visitors they may appear as remarkable works of art. Within the communities that created them, however, their deeper significance lies in performance. The spirit is not contained in the wood. It becomes present when the mask dances, when drums sound, and when the invisible world briefly enters the visible one.
