Introduction

In Costa Rica, folklore is not confined to storybooks or late-night ghost tales. Some of the country’s most enduring traditions are attached to specific places, annual journeys and public performances. A small statue in Cartago inspires one of the largest pilgrimages in the Americas. A dramatic rock above Aserrí is linked to stories of witches, enchanted kingdoms and hidden treasure. Giant masks and painted oxcarts turn streets and town squares into living stages where legends are performed rather than simply remembered.

These traditions show how Costa Rican folklore often works in practice. Sacred landscapes become centres of devotion, local landmarks acquire supernatural histories, and public celebrations keep old stories visible in modern life. Rather than existing separately from everyday culture, folklore becomes part of travel routes, festivals, religious observance and national identity.[cafetico.io]cafetico.ioCafe TicoThe Story Behind Costa Rica's Romería and the Virgin of…July 27, 2025 — 27 Jul 2025 — Each August 2, thousands walk to Cartag…Published: July 27, 2025

Cartago and the Virgin of the Angels

No sacred place occupies a larger place in Costa Rican popular imagination than the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels in Cartago. At the heart of the tradition is a small dark-coloured statue known affectionately as “La Negrita”. According to longstanding tradition, a young girl named Juana Pereira discovered the image in 1635. Each time she attempted to remove it from the spot where it had been found, the statue reportedly reappeared there. The repeated return was interpreted as a sign that a shrine should be built on that location.[wikipedia.org]WikipediaVirgen de los ÁngelesVirgen de los Ángeles

The story sits at the boundary between religion, legend and national folklore. For believers, it is a miracle narrative. For folklorists, it is also a place-making story that explains why a particular site became sacred. The physical landscape of Cartago is therefore inseparable from the narrative itself. The shrine, and later the basilica, exist because of the story, while the story survives because people continue to visit the place.[Wikipedia]WikipediaVirgen de los ÁngelesVirgen de los Ángeles

The most visible expression of this tradition is the annual Romería pilgrimage on 2 August. Hundreds of thousands of people travel on foot to Cartago from across the country, while estimates for participation over the pilgrimage period often reach into the millions. Many pilgrims complete the final stretch on their knees as an act of devotion or thanksgiving.[cafetico.io]cafetico.ioCafe TicoThe Story Behind Costa Rica's Romería and the Virgin of…July 27, 2025 — 27 Jul 2025 — Each August 2, thousands walk to Cartag…Published: July 27, 2025

From a folklore perspective, the Romería is significant because it transforms roads, highways and city streets into a ritual landscape. The journey itself has become part of the story. Families pass traditions from one generation to the next, personal miracle stories circulate among pilgrims, and the pilgrimage functions as a shared national narrative that links people from different regions and backgrounds. The result is a rare example of a sacred legend that remains a highly visible public event in contemporary Costa Rica.[cafetico.io]cafetico.ioCafe TicoThe Story Behind Costa Rica's Romería and the Virgin of…July 27, 2025 — 27 Jul 2025 — Each August 2, thousands walk to Cartag…Published: July 27, 2025

Aserrí, Zárate and Enchanted Landscapes

If Cartago represents sacred folklore, Aserrí represents enchanted folklore. The dominant landmark is the Rock of Aserrí, a striking geological formation that has long been associated with the legendary witch Zárate. The rock is a real and highly visible feature of the landscape, but local tradition turns it into something far more mysterious.[Go Visit Costa Rica]govisitcostarica.comGo Visit Costa Rica Aserri, Costa RicaGo Visit Costa RicaAserri, Costa Rica - City GuideThe legend behind the rock, which is a boulder precariously placed with a cave sitting…

Zárate is one of the most famous figures in Costa Rican legend. Different versions describe her as a witch, healer, sorceress or powerful Indigenous woman. She is often portrayed as both feared and respected, capable of rewarding the poor as well as punishing those who wrong her. In many accounts, her home lies within an enchanted realm concealed inside the Rock of Aserrí.[Wikipedia]WikipediaBruja ZárateBruja Zárate

The best-known story links her to an ancient settlement sometimes called Aquetzarí. After betrayal by a Spanish governor or nobleman, Zárate is said to have transformed an entire community into stone. The resulting rock formation became a permanent reminder of the event. Other versions describe magical caves, hidden cities, underground passages and treasures concealed within the mountain.[tourism.co.cr]tourism.co.crsta Rica TourismThe Legend of the Great Rock of Aquetzari, Costa RicaDiscover Aquetzari, one of Costa Rica's most haunting Indigenous-r…

What makes the legend important is not whether anyone believes the supernatural events literally occurred. The story gives meaning to a landscape that people can still see and visit. The rock becomes more than geology. It becomes a memory site where colonial history, Indigenous identity, local pride and supernatural storytelling overlap. The legend has remained influential enough to inspire literary retellings, dramatic works and modern reinterpretations of Costa Rican folklore.[Costa Rica Tourism]tourism.co.crsta Rica TourismThe Legend of the Great Rock of Aquetzari, Costa RicaDiscover Aquetzari, one of Costa Rica's most haunting Indigenous-r…

The Aserrí tradition also illustrates a broader pattern found throughout Costa Rica. Mountains, caves, rivers and unusual rock formations frequently become “enchanted places” in popular storytelling. Instead of existing in an abstract mythical world, supernatural narratives are anchored to recognisable locations that local people can point to on a map.[Wikipedia]WikipediaBruja ZárateBruja Zárate

Masquerades, Oxcarts and Public Performance

Not all folklore is attached to sacred shrines or haunted landmarks. Some of it comes alive through public performance. Costa Rica’s masquerades are among the clearest examples. These celebrations feature oversized masks carried through streets alongside brass-and-percussion ensembles known as cimarronas. The masks portray devils, giants, politicians, comic characters and figures from folklore.[Adventure Costa Rica Tours]costaricarios.comYour cultural travel guideAdventure Costa Rica ToursDay of Masquerade: Costa Rica's Halloween TraditionOctober 11, 2016 — Discover Costa Rica's Dia de la Mascarada…Published: October 11, 2016

Although modern masquerades include contemporary characters, they remain connected to older traditions of community celebration and symbolic performance. The masks transform ordinary public spaces into temporary folklore stages where familiar legends become visible and interactive. Instead of hearing about a monster or spirit, spectators encounter a physical representation moving through the crowd.[costaricarios.com]costaricarios.comYour cultural travel guideAdventure Costa Rica ToursDay of Masquerade: Costa Rica's Halloween TraditionOctober 11, 2016 — Discover Costa Rica's Dia de la Mascarada…Published: October 11, 2016

A similar process occurs with Costa Rica’s famous painted oxcarts. Historically, oxcarts were essential for transporting coffee and goods across difficult terrain during the nineteenth century. Over time they evolved from practical vehicles into cultural symbols. UNESCO recognised the country’s oxherding and oxcart traditions as Intangible Cultural Heritage because they embody skills, craftsmanship and community memory passed between generations.[ICH UNESCO]ich.unesco.orgOxherding and oxcart traditions in Costa RicaThe traditional oxcart, or carreta, is the product of Costa Rica's most famous cra…

The decorated oxcart occupies an unusual place between craft tradition and folklore. It is not a supernatural object, yet it carries stories about rural life, endurance, family identity and the formation of the nation. Public parades featuring brightly painted carts function as living performances of those narratives. The object itself becomes a storytelling device, much as a sacred shrine or legendary rock does in other traditions.[unesco.org]ich.unesco.orgOxherding and oxcart traditions in Costa RicaThe traditional oxcart, or carreta, is the product of Costa Rica's most famous cra…

Why These Places Matter

The Virgin of the Angels, the Rock of Aserrí, masquerade parades and painted oxcarts reveal a distinctive feature of Costa Rican folklore: stories are continually attached to physical places and public events. Sacred legends become pilgrimages. Enchanted landscapes become local landmarks. Traditional crafts become moving symbols in festivals and processions.

This connection between narrative and place helps explain why these traditions remain visible. They are not preserved only in books or archives. People walk the pilgrimage routes, climb the hills around Aserrí, build masks, paint carts and participate in annual celebrations. Through those activities, folklore becomes something that is experienced collectively in public space rather than merely remembered.[cafetico.io]cafetico.ioCafe TicoThe Story Behind Costa Rica's Romería and the Virgin of…July 27, 2025 — 27 Jul 2025 — Each August 2, thousands walk to Cartag…Published: July 27, 2025
