Introduction
Brunei’s best-known legends are often tied to the royal past or to famous river stories such as Nakhoda Manis. Yet a large part of the country’s oral heritage survives outside those celebrated narratives. Across Brunei-Muara, Belait, Tutong and Temburong, village storytellers, indigenous communities and local families have preserved tales of princesses, tricksters, giants, magical punishments, unusual marriages, sacred places and the origins of place names. Many of these stories were recorded in the collection Cerita Lisan Brunei, which gathered fifty oral narratives from all four districts and revealed a far more diverse storytelling landscape than the court-centred legends usually highlighted in popular accounts.[LITPAM Journal Center]journal-center.litpam.comJournal Center Exploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita LisanLITPAM Journal CenterExploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita Lisan…November 30, 2024 — This article reviews Cerita Lisa…
These district traditions matter because they preserve local memories and identities. They explain rivers, villages and hills; they reflect the experiences of Tutong, Belait, Dusun, Bisaya, Murut and Malay communities; and they show how moral lessons were passed between generations long before folklore entered museums, schools or printed books.[LITPAM Journal Center]journal-center.litpam.comJournal Center Exploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita LisanLITPAM Journal CenterExploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita Lisan…November 30, 2024 — This article reviews Cerita Lisa…
Stories from Brunei-Muara, Belait, Tutong and Temburong
The surviving oral record shows that each district developed its own storytelling emphasis.
Brunei-Muara, the most populous district, contributed the largest number of recorded tales in modern collections. These stories range from myths and legends to animal fables, trickster narratives and moral allegories. Their variety reflects the district’s role as a cultural meeting point where river settlements, coastal communities and the political centre of the country interacted for centuries.[LITPAM Journal Center]journal-center.litpam.comJournal Center Exploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita LisanLITPAM Journal CenterExploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita Lisan…November 30, 2024 — This article reviews Cerita Lisa…
Belait traditions often preserve memories connected with local communities, migration histories and landscape features. In folklore collections, Belait stories frequently emphasise community origins, unusual encounters and explanations for local customs. They demonstrate that the district’s oral heritage extends well beyond its modern association with oil development.[LITPAM Journal Center]journal-center.litpam.comJournal Center Exploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita LisanLITPAM Journal CenterExploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita Lisan…November 30, 2024 — This article reviews Cerita Lisa…
Tutong possesses a particularly rich body of place-name stories. One of the most striking examples concerns the origin of the name “Tutong” itself. According to a local tradition, a man named Si Tutong was rescued by sharks, discovered that they could take human form, and eventually married a shark woman. After returning to the human world, he left descendants connected to the river, and the waterway was said to have been named after him. The story combines animal transformation, marriage with otherworldly beings and landscape explanation, themes found throughout Southeast Asian oral tradition.[Wikipedia]WikipediaTutong RiverTutong River
Tutong also preserves village-origin narratives. The story attached to Kampong Bakiau, for example, centres on miraculous returns from apparent death. Several versions survive, but all revolve around a person believed dead who unexpectedly lives again, giving rise to the village’s name. Such tales are less about supernatural spectacle than about explaining place names and preserving collective memory.[Wikipedia]WikipediaKampong BakiauKampong Bakiau
Temburong, historically separated from the rest of Brunei by Brunei Bay, has long been associated with forest communities and indigenous groups including Murut populations. Its relative isolation helped preserve distinctive local traditions and oral histories. Folklore from the district often carries memories of migration, settlement and life in heavily forested landscapes where rivers were once the principal routes of travel.[Wikipedia]WikipediaTemburong DistrictTemburong District
Princesses, Tricksters, Giants and Magical Justice
When the royal legends are set aside, several recurring themes emerge across district storytelling.
Princess tales beyond the palace
Princess figures appear frequently in Brunei’s oral literature, but not always as members of the historical royal family. In many district stories they function as magical or symbolic characters whose actions test honesty, loyalty or courage. These narratives often resemble wider Malay storytelling traditions in which marriages, journeys and impossible tasks become lessons about proper conduct.[LITPAM Journal Center]journal-center.litpam.comJournal Center Exploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita LisanLITPAM Journal CenterExploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita Lisan…November 30, 2024 — This article reviews Cerita Lisa…
Unlike court chronicles, these tales are usually localised. A princess may be connected to a particular village, hill or river rather than to the national history of the sultanate. The emphasis is less on political legitimacy and more on morality, family obligations and the consequences of personal choices.
Tricksters and clever survivors
Many oral stories feature characters who succeed through wit rather than strength. Trickster tales are common throughout the Malay world, and Brunei’s district traditions preserve local versions that use humour to criticise greed, arrogance or foolishness. These stories were particularly effective as teaching tools because listeners could enjoy the comedy while absorbing social lessons.[LITPAM Journal Center]journal-center.litpam.comJournal Center Exploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita LisanLITPAM Journal CenterExploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita Lisan…November 30, 2024 — This article reviews Cerita Lisa…
The survival of trickster narratives also demonstrates that Brunei’s folklore is not exclusively heroic or aristocratic. Ordinary villagers, animals and cunning outsiders often take centre stage.
Giants and extraordinary beings
Giants appear in numerous Bornean oral traditions, and Bruneian district folklore is no exception. In local storytelling, giants are frequently associated with unusual rocks, hills or other striking features of the landscape. They may serve as creators, destroyers or embodiments of untamed power. Although individual stories differ by district, giant figures commonly explain why a place looks the way it does today.[LITPAM Journal Center]journal-center.litpam.comJournal Center Exploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita LisanLITPAM Journal CenterExploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita Lisan…November 30, 2024 — This article reviews Cerita Lisa…
These narratives blur the boundary between folklore and geography. A landscape feature becomes memorable because a story gives it a personality and a history.
The theme of magical justice
Perhaps the strongest thread running through district folklore is magical justice. Characters who disrespect parents, break promises, abuse hospitality or act selfishly often face supernatural consequences. This theme links local stories to famous Bruneian legends such as Nakhoda Manis, but it also appears in many lesser-known village narratives.[LITPAM Journal Center]journal-center.litpam.comJournal Center Exploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita LisanLITPAM Journal CenterExploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita Lisan…November 30, 2024 — This article reviews Cerita Lisa…
The purpose is moral rather than theological. Storytellers use dramatic transformations, curses and extraordinary punishments to make ethical lessons unforgettable.
Ethnic Memory and Local Identity
District stories also preserve memories of Brunei’s cultural diversity. The country contains several indigenous communities with their own histories, languages and traditions. Oral narratives record migration routes, ancestral settlements, inter-community relationships and explanations for local customs that might otherwise disappear from public memory.[Wikipedia]WikipediaTutong languageTutong language
In some cases, a story may explain how a village acquired its name. In others, it preserves a community’s understanding of its origins or relationship with neighbouring groups. Such narratives are especially valuable because many were transmitted orally rather than through formal written histories. They often preserve perspectives that do not appear in official chronicles or government records.[Wikipedia]WikipediaKampong BakiauKampong Bakiau
The stories are therefore not merely entertainment. They act as informal archives of identity, linking present-day communities to remembered ancestors, places and experiences.
How Collections Preserve Living Oral Tradition
Much of Brunei’s non-royal folklore survived because researchers, teachers and students began recording stories that had previously circulated only by word of mouth. The collection Cerita Lisan Brunei, assembled from fieldwork conducted by Universiti Brunei Darussalam students and later reviewed by scholars, represents one of the most important efforts to preserve these narratives. The collection includes myths, legends, fables, trickster tales, giant stories and local traditions gathered from all four districts.[litpam.com]journal-center.litpam.comJournal Center Exploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita LisanLITPAM Journal CenterExploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita Lisan…November 30, 2024 — This article reviews Cerita Lisa…
The review of the collection notes that Brunei-Muara contributed the largest number of recorded stories, while Tutong and Temburong contributed fewer. Researchers suggest that differences in population size, accessibility and documentation partly explain this imbalance. The pattern highlights an important reality: oral tradition survives most strongly when communities, schools and cultural institutions actively record it.[LITPAM Journal Center]journal-center.litpam.comJournal Center Exploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita LisanLITPAM Journal CenterExploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita Lisan…November 30, 2024 — This article reviews Cerita Lisa…
Today these district stories remain significant because they reveal aspects of Brunei that royal chronicles alone cannot capture. They preserve village humour, indigenous memory, local geography, moral teaching and community identity. Together they show that Brunei’s folklore is not a single national legend but a mosaic of regional voices, each adding its own perspective to the country’s cultural heritage.[LITPAM Journal Center]journal-center.litpam.comJournal Center Exploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita LisanLITPAM Journal CenterExploring Brunei's Oral Traditions: A Review of Cerita Lisan…November 30, 2024 — This article reviews Cerita Lisa…
